@ariadne Remapped to other functions, yes. I wish they had the Menu key on both sides too, then I could have another pair of modifier keys, but no, they had to include just the right-side one.My current model also has 4 extra function keys above the keypad, but the replacement puts the LEDs there instead.

@dangillmor Didn't Taco Bell independently identify the source prior to the FDA getting involved?

@dangillmor Same way all the tech companies do, of course: having a clause in the original contract allowing them to unilaterally change it.

@ariadne This. All roo often I see the C# I need to solve a problem. To apply Copilot the way work wants me to, I have to translate that back into English. That's 10x the work dealing with the imprecision and ambiguity of English when spelling out what I want done. We invented programming languages to eliminate that and make it easier to tell the computer what to do. WTAF?

@ariadne So far it seems to all be passive. The laws require software and services to permit others to interoperate with them, but no requirements that those others actually take advantage of it.

@ariadne Exactly. The approach needs to be that anything not strongly encrypted with keys only the parties to the exchange control is completely public. Sounds like an extreme position, but that's the reality today. If it doesn't meet that mark, don't try to suggest it's somehow not visible to anyone who looks.I wouldn't even store the encrypted messages on a server if there's a way to avoid it.

@ariadne He's going to be _very_ surprised by the stupid Oracle v. Google decision that held that APIs are copyrightable. Not implementations of the API, the API itself. Like I said, it was a stupid decision that even Oracle regretted.

@dangillmor But that won't affect use of anti-money-laundering laws to harass small businesses that do mostly cash over all those "structured" cash deposits (they deposit their money daily) or those "overly large" cash deposits (they hold the money and deposit once a week).

@ariadne I'd like to hear your ideas on moderation. I have mine, but they don't work on a federated system and recommending self-defense isn't helpful in too many cases. Do you have blog articles I can read?

@ariadne Why did they even submit the PR in the first place? They even admit up front it doesn't fix a bug and that they didn't research whether or not pkgconf has any such ASCII-paths-only policy. The submitter seems to have developed LLM-induced brain damage. One more bit backing up your decision to ban LLM contributions.

@ariadne How about software that doesn't help you shoot yourself in the foot, or guide you in that direction, but that if you _do_ decide you really have to shoot yourself in the foot does it as efficiently and cleanly as everything else?

@ariadne I'd argue that features that will let you shoot yourself in the foot aren't antifeatures just because of that. Ones that'll let you do that unintentionally or without any sort of warning, those probably are. I just find a lot of features very useful for someone who knows what they're doing that'll also let you do a lot of damage if you don't. I prefer those features to be well-thought-out and working well.

@ariadne I can agree with never implementing that, yeah. I can think of a use case for it, yes, but I'll still argue it shouldn't be implemented.C89/C90 would be more what I was thinking.

@ariadne Very apt.I don't think it's safe to separate the chatbots from the people behind them. They have to be considered in combination, and the intentions of the people in charge of the combination are... not IMO benevolent or even benign.

@stux That sounds like how a lot of rivers in the US got Indian-sounding names that mean "river".

@stux Automated mail-back checks? When someone signs up, they go into a queue. After a random time (in the 10-20 hour range sounds reasonable) they get an email with base64-encoded random token. They have to reply back with ONLY that token in the body, no quoted text or anything. I figure the spammers will be either lazy or incompetent and won't be able to figure out how to deal with both the delay and creating the reply body without auto-quoting the original message.
