If we want to improve Glasgow's economic situation, we don't necessarily need new buildings, we need to make the most of the ones we already have. This photo from Argyle Street in the city centre sums up this all-to-often overlooked issue. As a result, all too many buildings are economically under-active as they may only be bringing in half or a quarter, or less, of the business rates they could if fully occupied. How can this issue be solved? I have no easy solutions to offer, but it's one we really need to address. To do this, we need to work out how big a problem this is (and so how much money is being lost to the city as a result), why it has happened, and what we can to encourage more use of empty upper floors across the city, whether for commercial purposes or for residential ones.#glasgow #architecture #builtheritage

I always try to photograph these old cast-iron mile-markers whenever I spot them. This one was on the road back from Helensburgh today. The style is similar, buy not exactly the same as the ones giving distances to Glasgow and this highlights that before standardisation of signs, each town produced their own designs. I'm guessing this one was produced by Dumbarton (or Dunbarton as it's spelt here).#glasgow #milemarker #castiron #helensburgh #dumbarton

A memorial to John Stewart who founded the City of Glasgow Friendly Society in 1862. This sculpture, on the city's Douglas Street, is by William Kellock Brown. Looking up at the gorgeously Art Deco Leyland Motor Company building on Salkeld Street on the Southside of Glasgow. Built in 1933, it's thought to have been designed by James Miller, one of the unsung heroes of Glasgow's architecture. #glasgow #architecture #architecturephotography #artdeco

What I'm presuming is an original, and rather beautiful, acid-etched window design on the former Garnethill branch of the Glasgow Savings Bank on New City Road. It was created by Neil C. Duff and was built in 1909.#glasgow #architecture #window #garnethill #decorativeglass

I love the way the chimney flues have been incorporated into the facade of this tenement on Whitehill Street in the Dennistoun area of Glasgow. It's dated 1887, making it one of the first tenements in the city where a design feature was made of the flues rather than hiding them behind fake windows to maintain the building's symmetry.
