       nay, @vitalis A hatchet, or even a smaller camp ax, is the right way for a survivalist setup like she is demonstrating that folder for. Certainly easier to sharpen, as @tobias pointed out. You don't need a mallet for batoning, but any heavy stick would work for that. And I am not going to get into the failures of locking mechanisms in such a setting either. Gimmie an ax if I can only have one. A fixed blade AND an ax ifn I get two.edit: My prefered set is a Gransfors Bruk Camp ax and a Bush Monkey Galt. The Galt is a very thick O1 tool steel blade with an easy to resharpen edge.@GensokyoGardner

I do have a good foresters ax as the hatchet is a bit smal...wait, what about a saw? I brushed it of as silly, why bring a panel saw on my back (I have no large bow saws). And then I come in to see this excellent poast of yours. I will definitely have to think about this some more, @GensokyoGardner. And at 70 bucks for that pocket Silky... @vitalis
