Linux systems using Secure Boot rely on a Microsoft signed "shim" bootloader. The current key expires in September, after which Microsoft will no longer use it to sign new bootloaders. While a replacement key has been available since 2023, it is missing from many systems. Fixing this requires a firmware update from hardware vendors, which isn't guaranteed for older devices. Donald Knuth is one of the greatest computer scientists alive quit email in 1990 & never looked back. His reason? Deep work requires deep focus. He communicates by postal mail, once every 6 months. While we’re drowning in social media & email notifications, this man is calmly finishing a masterpiece he started in 1962. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is simply be unreachable. the IBM ThinkPad 235, a cult classic subnotebook released in late 90s. IBM engineering made incredibly compact machines like this one, which was exclusive to the Japanese market. There was time when IBM and many consumer products were made with industrial design teams and user replaceable parts. Sadly that era is gone now. Anyway, i am sharing this for nostalgic reasons.

The core tension is now:a) Device owners expect to run any software they choose on hardware they paid for. Where is my freedom ?b) Google says less tech savvy users benefit from robust, automated protections with their ADV.But, Google cannot guarantee 100% perfect security either. it is a matter of mitigating risk, not eliminating it. The ongoing issue is deciding exactly where to draw the line between protecting users and preserving their control over their own devices.

The Supreme Court has dismissed an American engineer’s appeal to have AI named as the inventor on a patent application. Haha. AI output like image, video, code or anything else created by Gen AI is also not copyrightable and now court says AI can't be Inventor too.
