@q66 Something that requires that level of ongoing testing and diffused code changes seems like it has to be managed upstream. Chimera + QEMU might make some nice tooling to do differential testing but ultimately someone has to decide what platforms they want to support.

@ariadne I think there's a lot of merit to that idea although I don't understand how to build it. As models get more powerful the harnesses required to make them write coherent code or whatever aren't getting any simpler, so I think that's a strong argument for the "small pieces in a structured formation" kind of arrangement. Big LLMs have the attracting property that a user can start with a small description and see something happen right away, I wonder how to replicate that.

@ariadne @LordCaramac In my prior thinking about this kind of problem I came to the view that handling assistant-type requests at its core starts with program synthesis, but not any kind of clarity on how those programs should be written. It would be an interesting exercise to make a catalog of representative queries, and try to hand-write pseudocode or Python for each just to get a sense of what the deficiencies of that approach are (I suspect the answer is a special-purpose language, unsure)

@nina_kali_nina @elly Is it worth replacing the WiFi card? Newer cards tend to perform better and I think use less power, I don't preemptively swap but enough of mine have failed that I've seen the difference even in pretty old laptops.

@nina_kali_nina @elly Possibly, many PC laptops can use just about any PCIe 2230 shaped card. Some have firmware restrictions on what they'll accept, but these things fail often enough that if so someone will already have complained on the internet. Intel AX210 cards should be pretty widely compatible even if the BSD drivers don't have support for the newest modes. Actually just ordered one for an old laptop here with failing WiFi.

@TheOneDoc @q66 Yes. I think fixing X11 must have been untenable, at least those most familiar seem to think so, but we must make Wayland work for accessibility. It's not a problem set I understand very well.

@ariadne Oh cool, interesting. I've been curious about applying sequence models (not LLMs, but smaller sequence and graph transformers and such) to making e-graph type compilers work in practice. Modern toolchain complexity is pretty painful, but if you could have a simpler engine that leans more on stats sampled from real running systems than a pile of hacky heuristics that seems like it could be a big win.

@mntmn I missed this aspect of the Novena, quite elegant.Edit: I wonder if it would ever make sense to connect the holes together for power + 1-wire and ground. A way to inventory everything in the chassis without a lot of extra wiring.
