@juliaTo be fair, I used to be the same in a lot of ways when I was younger, so I have some initial sympathy for those people. I get how it happens.In a lot of ways, being progressive sometimes functions more like a vibes-based identity than a coherent ideology, especially in group dynamics and among young folks. It's no longer about the actual opinions.Especially when you're young, insecure, and just started learning about leftism, you reeeally want to belong with the cool punky queer leftist radicals with the most vocal and extreme opinions. After all, they're super cool and intimidating and they keep saying they're the most resolute and uncompromising fighters for a better world. And you already (correctly) made the experience that lefty stuff is good and righty stuff is evil, so if they're the most leftist, they must be the best people.You desperately want to fit in and you want them to accept and validate you as a good person. Being a part of the group gives you a sense of community and belonging, you're constantly told you're on the good guys' side, and besides, you might be attracted to them and their style, you might want to explore your queerness, and you care about what the cool older trans woman thinks about you because you want to find your own place in the world and you want to be like her and she's 'goals' (bleh).Maybe you don't yet understand all of the opinions you're supposed to have to fit in. Maybe they don't make much sense to you yet. But you can't question them or talk about it. Any misstep might out you as a poser or a bigot! Any doubts might mean you're throwing a minority under the bus! Any 'libshit' opinion might mean the cool goth tgirl lesbian no longer thinks you're cool! You're not a 'safe person' anymore, people will be uncomfortable around you and you'll never be invited to any event ever again! All this adds to the pressure to "repeat what we say or else you're part of the problem". You reeeally don't want to look like a wimp in front of your new friends, right?This peer pressure leaves only one solution: copy everything you hear so people like you. So having a vocal social opinion ends up more about signalling your group membership and looking for validation as a good leftist from the people you think are cool, than about the actual topic at hand. The more radical and extreme your opinion looks, the cooler you are. It's no longer about the topic at all.And uhhh well I'm not trying to sound like a conservative who "used to be punk" and is now complaining about 'cancel culture' or anything, lol! Because I know my past self would have accused me of such for saying these things. But no, I'm still a communist, I am queer, I am progressive, and I actually agree with nearly all of the opinions of the folks I'm referring to here in principle.I'm just afraid that these hidden peer pressure dynamics make leftist movements vulnerable to infiltration and outside manipulation by bad actors (e. g. the "discriminatng against people of wealth is bigotry" thing). Anyone can use these peer pressure dynamics to control us and what we think about. It's why TERFs often use feminism as a cover: to manipulate people who rightfully associate feminism with good opinions.And to circle this back to what we were talking about, I think that's why people like that attack others over this AI thing so radically and with so much vitriol.It's not about AI at all. It's about looking like you're doing your part in a fight against evil and fascism. It's all about the vibes, about belonging to the good guys. It's about being afraid to be part of the "centrists" or "libs" your cooler friends look down on. 'Nuance' itself is viewed as an attack right-wingers and centrists use to sabotage progress.It's the same reason why a lot of young leftists are super, super extremely passionate about Palestine and make it their entire identity, but not at all as passionate about any other ongoing genocide like the Rohingya one. It's because a pro-Palestine position is now socially a litmus test for good people, while an anti-Myanmar position isn't. Or why you'll be ostracised immediately for enjoying Harry Potter, while Minecraft gets a free pass and is even a 'trans culture' game.So a perfectly reasonable opposition to AI founded on actual arguments is corrupted into a blanket opposition to anything that has "AI vibes".

@oddtail I made quite similar experiences actually.Most clueless cis people I met sure weren't very sensible about word choices and reading the room ("so i was wondering, ehh, are you a boy or a girl??"), but once you gave them an answer to whatever they were wondering, they just would shrug, accept it and move on with our activity at hand.They'd then include me in gendered activities and spaces without any awkwardness or second thoughts at all, they'd be super relaxed about it, they'd clearly just take my gender as truth, and they'd get irate on my behalf if people misgendered or excluded me because they were genuinely baffled why people would mistreat me that way. It was as natural to them as anything else that I was a woman, it didn't even occur to them that it could be "wrong".It took my middle-aged, cranky, Yugoslavian coworker who never heard of trans people exactly two days to completely understand my womanhood. When I eventually talked to her about the whole thing, she was surprised I brought it up, but said something that stuck to me ever since:That she met a lot of unique and surprising people in her life, and that you learn things about the world and other people every day. And that it was just an interesting medical fun fact about me. And that's all. She said that to her, it was no different than when she met a black guy in our village and then found out he and his family are actually natively German. She compared me to her grandma, who apparently had a lot of facial hair, which ran in her family. It was just a fun fact about me that I'm trans, nothing more.The validity of my womanhood was never in question to her, just whether I was a woman at all. That's the main thing really.You really hit the nail on the head: transphobes really, really want to make us think that we're alone. That everyone naturally sees us as freaks by default, except those we have successfully 'convinced of our ideology'.It's actually the same mechanic at play as with conspiracy types, crazy conservatives or elderly people refusing to go with the times.They want to use "common sense" as a backup to try to convince you that their irrational fears are actually normal and how everyone else thinks. They're super afraid of having to change their world view, of being wrong about something. They want to make us feel like we have no support, not necessarily to hurt us directly, but because they themselves secretly feel ashamed and insecure about the world moving past them or judging them for something they don't understand. (Ideological transphobes who know what they're doing nonwithstanding, they're doing it on purpose).That's also why allies can sometimes be insidiously worse than clueless folks. Allies might just as well have the same thought patterns as transphobes, but end the thought process on "...but it would be mean to misgender them, I should be nice and supportive."They still fundamentally think we're freaks, they just think it's ethically good to be nice to freaks.Before my coworker experience, I always felt that even if cis people accept us, they at best mentally create a third category: women, men and "trans". Or that they'd always see me as a guy who wants to be a woman and who they needed to be respectful of not to hurt their feelings. But that isn't the case. They just see me as a woman with a medical history.Transphobes are the only ones questioning people's genders' validity. Normal people don't even have that thought process, because validity isn't an idea they associate with gender.

@ndaktuell Ich finde es immer ein bisschen schwach, wenn man Parteien wie die CDU erst dann kritisiert, wenn sie mit der AfD zusammenarbeiten. Auch wenn es die AfD gar nicht gäbe, sollte die CDU an sich doch ausreichend selbst disqualifizieren.Im Umkehrschluss heißen solche Nachrichten halt immer, dass die Linke die CDU akzeptabel finden würde, wenn sie nicht mit der AfD zusammenarbeiten würde. Dieses ganze Framing von wegen "demokratische Parteien vs. AfD" gehört entsorgt. Die CDU ist nicht, und war nie, eine demokratische Partei, geschweige denn jemand, den man respektiert oder mit der Zusammenarbeit denkbar wäre. Mit solchen Kontrast-Gegenüberstellungen mit der AfD wie durch die "Brandmauer" verherrlicht man nur die CDU und leugnet ihre eigenen faschistoiden Tendenzen.

I love #KDE a lot, but if I had to come up with something to criticise, I think it would be the contrast in quality between the flagship components (i. e. Plasma, Dolphin etc.) and the myriad of more obsure KDE applications.Many of the latter don't follow KDE's own UX or design guidelines, are long obsolete, lack important features, have long-standing bugs with occasional critical impacts on usability, are missing integration with other KDE system components, are worse versions of more modern KDE applications, or are simply strangely low-quality.To be sure, I don't know a solution either! There is just no good way to handle such cases.Outright removing them would be awful and a waste of resources; they work perfectly fine after all and it would be unfair to take that away from both users and developers.Releasing them from the KDE umbrella and into independence if they don't meet quality standards sounds good at first, but it doesn't solve any problems when you think about it any more. There won't be any more development efforts magically pouring into an independent project all of a sudden, and all you did is create administrative difficulty and sever communication routes and infrastructure.Say you determine that Tokodon isn't good enough to be part of the KDE suite. You remove all KDE branding from it, remove it from metapackages and just release it into the wild. In the future, when people ask whether KDE has a Fedi client, you'll have to say "no, but the closest thing is that we used to have one" and point them towards the now-independent Tokodon. Did this actually help anyone? No. You only made it even less likely for someone eager to contribute to a KDE Fedi client to stumble upon Tokodon because you let it go.But without significantly more volunteer work that just isn't available, these programs can't really be updated or improved up to standard either, and active volunteers are super rare.So they just kinda... float around in a bad state, but not bad enough to be removed.But this current state of affairs is also not a good solution, because now there's a ton of lower-quality official KDE projects that look to the end user like they're going to be just as much an equal, integral part of one's system as something like Dolphin or Konsole, but with no way of communicating that they're actually hardly maintained niche apps that aren't representative of KDE as a whole. This might reflect negatively on the project and confuse users.I think the root cause of why this happened is multi-dimensional.There are just not enough volunteer developers willing to maintain niche applications.Not all KDE applications' development processes are as integrated into the general KDE dev community as the flagship apps; many smaller applications are one-person projects with little oversight or assistance.A lot of programs are very old former glory flagship projects, from times where KDE's scope used to be a lot wider (e. g. Konqueror, KOffice, KMoney etc.), and nowadays there are way fewer people working on them than would be required to maintain such behemoths.But what do we do?

After Bluesky, Threads, and so on, the whole #WSocial thing is another reminder that it was never about the #Fediverse being "too complicated" or "just for nerds".A bafflingly large amount of people genuinely only act on a gut feeling telling them that only commercial products with fancy marketing owned by a for-profit corporation can be trustworthy, 'official' and 'legal', for the lack of a better word.If something is a commercial offering by a competent-looking, rich family man in a suit, it's clearly an official, legal, trustworthy product. You can be proud of using such a fancy-looking service.When they see a community-run open-source project or a grassroots initiative, their first instinct is that it must be shady, illegal, complicated, broken or predatory in some way. It's probably some aftermarket grey area bootleg made by weird tech nerds, political groups with an ulterior motive, conspiracy theorists or some naive teenage hackers. They'd also be embarrassed for using it in front of their peers and neighbours; who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something?The same people are the reason why Google is using the word 'sideloading', why scammers love wearing fancy suits, why people suddenly act childishly helpless in front of LibreOffice, or why DIY HRT is so demonised.They trust any kind of 'official approval' over their own senses. If someone does something that isn't 'approved', they're a bad person or clearly endangering themselves and others. No idea why exactly, but psh, it must be wrong somehow, or everyone would do it, right?If people on the Fediverse understood that the whole "it's all so complicated and clunky" thing is just a thinly veiled excuse for a general disdain for non-commercial software, we could finally stop making all our software imitate their corporate equivalents in a futile attempt to appease people who never gave us a chance in the first place.You'll never convince them to treat it in good faith no matter how much effort or money you put into UX or 'ease of use'.
