       @dangillmor A few years ago, my IT department would not let our build system download a .zip file because "it might have malware that Windows might execute".Now, those same people tell me "install OpenButthole because everybody is doing it, and I report to the CFO not engineering, so my KPIs go up if you use AI".The whole "development community" has gone nuts, because they are paid to be so.I'm ashamed of my work helping enable these abominations.

       @baldur I suspect a lot of this is due to the way web devs are hired. I've seen managers ask their recruiter to find "somebody with at least 3 years Angular or React experience". That's it.You would not hire for OS-level or even any part of the native code stack by recruiting for "at least 3 years as a C++ programmer".

       @dalias When I've done this kind of thing, I call it a "Software Inventory" or "Manifest", not a BOM. It's organized around security and licensing as you say, but not "here's every part you need to build something commercial-grade from this pile of SW (which itself is moving beneath you)"

       @dangillmor It's a pattern I'd call "deference to authority". Don't be seen to be challenging what the leaders say.If the author had originally written "Trump invents a story about vandalism to excuse his incompetent work on the Reflecting Pool", would his editor not feel pressure to tone that down ?Why ? Because the editor feels like the publisher would disapprove of the language ? Readers would be offended ?Let's ask them. Journalists should be the most transparent of all.
