@blainsmith @rbphotographic @alice I stopped grocery shopping. I hated it. I figure skate for exercise because it’s mostly women and gay men at the rink. I spend so much time with (mostly well behaved but oblivious) men at work that I mostly go to women-centered spaces now, especially if it’s on my own.

@blainsmith @Colman @rbphotographic @alice when I was pretty young (15 or 16), my mom would send me to the store. Once a man blocked me between his car and mine and tried to get me to go home and have sex with him for money in the grocery store parking lot. Catcalls were common when I was younger and lived in the Midwest or Boston. In Seattle, I had someone ask me out in the pasta aisle. If it’s hot and I wear a dress people will make creepy (but probably what they think are complimentary) comments. My 60-ish year old neighbor made a point of interrupting me and commenting when I was washing my car on my driveway in a tennis dress.

@negative12dollarbill @alice @Colman @blainsmith @rbphotographic it’s better to compliment them on their work. Women are so use to being objectified and only there to be looked at that they sometimes want to not be looked at and judged on their appearance. I’m not speaking for all women but for me at least, I don’t think of how I look at work at all. It can be jarring to be reminded of it when I’m at work, I think of myself as a sort of formless blob talking about operating systems. You might think it’s a compliment but it might be difficult for the women to have to stop their work and think about how to respond. @blainsmith @Colman @rbphotographic @alice I get hot easily but I can’t wear clothing that is too “skimpy” and of course there’s the classic being sent home from school because your tank top is “distracting” the boys. Note that our school didn’t have AC ..

@moonrabbit no, I haven’t. I could see it spreading but I generally don’t have a skin allergy response and I don’t get a rash everywhere that is exposed to the sun. It’s usually my neck, chest, upper back and arms, but not my face or hands

Do you read books by women and from the perspective of women? I’ve always thought that himpathy (a disproportionate level of empathy for men) was due to men simply not being able to imagine themselves as women, while women have been trained their entire lives to put themselves in men’s shoes. @ariadne @TheOneDoc my salon has been using this stuff lately that causes the polish to lift up, then they scrape it off with a cuticle stick. https://a.co/d/0aLPRhwI They really shouldnt file down to the nail, just enough to break the top layer and then soak in acetone. I’ve been gel nails for about 4+ years continuously without a break by now.

@ariadne @TheOneDoc ohhh @dan only just pointed out that you are in Seattle. If you are anywhere close to Northgate, go to Nice nails in the strip mall with Family donuts and tell Kim and Khanh that Irene sent you and you want them to use the painted on gel remover (no idea what its called). The donuts are excellent too but you have to make an appt before 10am to get them 😂

@ariadne @TheOneDoc @dan hmmm yeah it’s tough because there are a lot of places that do a really shoddy job and I don’t know any place down there. I tried a bunch when my nail salon was on hiatus because they moved locations and most were terrible. One place that didn’t sterilize their tools, another one that painted gel onto my cuticles, etc. it’s so hit or miss. But I’d just keep trying new places and keep an eye on them while they work on your nails for first time. It’s annoying though. 😢

Our cats enjoy a good walk when it’s not too hot for their humans. They aren’t adventure cats by any means but getting to outside and smell the flowers is healthy for them, especially as they are 16 and 17 now! #cats #catsofmastodon #pnw
