If you pretend that "misandry" exists as an equal and opposite force to misogyny you are claiming that the incredible, overwhelming gendered violence experienced by people who aren't men, perpetrated by men, is the same thing as the oppressed hating their oppressors.        Today I ate breakfast on my deck, serenaded by American robins, a distant song sparrow, and the ever-present (and very loud outside my bedroom window) northern cardinals. A gray catbird lurked in the apple tree, making their strange catbird sounds, a black-capped chickadee stopped by briefly, and American goldfinches sung from the neighbour's yard, while house sparrows yipped from a different neighbour's direction. Common grackles whizzed by carrying food to a nearby nest, European starlings landed on nearby rooftops, and further off I heard red-winged blackbirds calling. The only regulars missing, I'd say, were the American crows (often, as of late, being chased by blackbirds, as they're notorious nest thieves), and the great blue herons (I live not far from the water, and I see one flying by most days).I live in southern Quebec, Canada.

       Some other birds that I might not see/here *daily* from my house, but are around often as of late: chipping sparrows, downy and hairy woodpeckers, turkey vultures, common ravens, mourning doves.

       In a recent thread @CedarTea touched on frustration with a certain type of utilitarian environmentalist city-dweller, and I immediately thought of a YouTube video I saw recently where someone confidently stated that people SHOULDN'T grow their own food. People should live in high-rises and leave food-growing to the professionals, who can do it more efficiently. And I just had to sit with that for a second, and wonder at people who think the only benefit in engaging with growing or gathering food is producing as much as possible, and if the "as much as possible" isn't good enough then you shouldn't do it. This isn't a knock on city-dwellers or high-rises, or a disagreement that there are reductions in individual CO2 emissions from people living in densely populated areas. But I do feel a great deal of sadness, and feel that people are wildly missing the point of it all, when they decide that engaging with the rest of the living world in a variety of ways, gaining greater understanding of agriculture and ecology, seeing and feeling yourself as an integral part of life, just doesn't really matter very much. Efficiency rules all!

       It's been three months since we got Oscar. He's plumper, sheds way less, seems stronger and is definitely a more confident jumper, his fur is softer and weirdly, his poop doesn't smell as vile? All around he seems healthier, a sweet, goofy, cautious little guy who's starting to feel like he's home.
