       @nina_kali_nina Very neat! How do the graphics work on fwix? Is this ye olden times Linux 2.x as well? As in, give a root running process access to the VGA and cross your fingers? :)

       @nina_kali_nina Ohhh, that sounds very fitting! It might not be that hard to run an older xfree86 vesa server, it also expects to just poke at the VGA directly. It should work, theoretically. I think all it really needs from the os is PCI access and a VT. And I think the VT might be optional?

       @nina_kali_nina maybe I still remember how to do that! I definitely used to install my own x servers from source in the day.I might be misremembering whether that was or was not a cluster fuck. I'm remembering it as "not that terrible".I'll see if I can find some time to try! It'd be a fun exercise. If that works maybe...CDE?😱

       @mos_8502 I think FPGAs are the only way;You're going through the 5 stages of "no CPUs with external memory busses grief" that I've gone through. Based on my research the only vaguely viable options of parts for which a lot of NOS exists is * I960* 68k (with 24 bit memory bus)Based on my research (and I really did spend months looking at options) those are the only available chips with external memory busses and capable of supporting an MMU.And they'd still need an FPGA as chipset

       @mos_8502 with the xc7 and ECP5 there's open tooling to do it, and the ECP5 exists in tqfp-144 which is achievable at home with a heat gun, solder paste, and patience (or is VERY cheap to have placed by a fab, no x-ray necessary!)But the i960 has the same problem.Only the 68k doesn't, but then you're limited to 16mb of ram. The "full fat" 68ks are unaffordable (and largely UNAVAILABLE for any price)Plus they'll run out.So I think that leaves i960 or fgpa.

       Hey fellow #retrocomputing kids. In my quest to make the very bestest #PATA (#IDE) emulation device there's some tradeoffs to be made. The device would allow you to emulate up to two PATA devices as once. Any combination of HDD/CDROM/ZIP maybe more.Listed speeds are of course dependent on what you spend on the actual backing storage :) The 128mb card you got for free in "my first digital camera" is going to be slow :PWould you prefer, (ordered by device cost. cheapest first.)

       @KeyJ Yeah, that makes sense. SATA M.2 drives are still pretty plentiful though. You're probably thinking of MSATA, that's pretty niche now.But mainstream brands still make M.2 SATA ssds today.The SD storage at those same speeds is more expensive due to extra component costs. SD at UHS-II and above is really super duper finnicky compared to M.2 SATA :)

       @KeyJ @domi yeah, I think that's a fair point. The point of doing the m.2 sata at all would be to get higher performance storage for a price not the dissimilar from an SD card you'd need up achieve similar performance. But at lower cost for the actual device.If people can't get sata devices to plug in then that doesn't really work very well. 😅

       @wolf480pl you can, and you can downgrade usually, but you might need an external programmer. 😀If you currently have no problems there's usually not a big incentive to upgrade. You will get cpu microcode updates from os patched as well.Usually reasons to upgrade include: * UEFI security issues you care about * XMP/EXPO Profiles of your ram not working  * Wanting to upgrade to a newer cpu and needing a bios update first. If you're not in any of those positions there's usually no reason.
