thinking about the category of things where there's a proper way to refer to them, but people instead often use a related person's name as the entire name of the thing- frankenstein- falstad- godboltto be fair godbolt is a much cooler sounding name than compiler explorer

seems to happen all the time for books and sufficiently book-like things?- academics refer to studies by just their author names all the time- "reading Tolkien", with "...'s works" implied- "I read that in Strunk and White", presumably while on a Magic School Bus expedition through those authors' internal organs

WebPCIe is definitely not a thing afaict, but I'm also not the first to think of that joke, and everyone seems to agree that it would be a terrible idea so we'll definitely get it for real one dayit's okay though because we split out the really dangerous part into its own spec, WebDMA, which requires an extra confirmation dialog

@jpm @azonenberg anecdotally, one of the unexpected advantages of transitioning is that my name no longer sounds like an obvious pseudonym, and no longer matches a guy in Georgia who was convicted of crimesI was "randomly" selected for bomb-swabbing all the time before, to the point of it being a running joke, and then it suddenly stoppedanyway have you checked if there's another Andrew Zonenberg who did crimes? if so, try being a girl, worked for me

a lot of js design decisions get a lot of hate, but i feel like `Object.freeze()` doesn't get dunked on nearly as much as it deserveslike, "what if we had variables that look writable, and nothing ever stops you from writing to them, but if you try to write to them it just silently ignores you" is such an obviously unhinged misfeature to have in a language

okay it looks like the failure mode here is that grbl defaults to homing toward the max of each axis, calling that 0, and expecting you to give it negative coordinatesbut if you're at 0 and you forget this and issue g0 x50, it will try its best to comply and move 50mm past the end of the axis

switched X to home the other way, and we have first chips! this is me manually typing gcode into a terminal to drill four holes in a 100x100mm squarethe pair of holes further from the camera are at y=0. that's much further from the edge of the bed than i wanted. may redrill some mounting holes and move the gantry back to fix that

extended it out to a 4x3 grid, and tapped all the holes. 4x4 would fit if i could reach the back of the bedi don't trust these as precise references (threaded holes already aren't, but also the drill was flexing a bit while doing this) but they'll be plenty good to attach spoilboards or vises to#cnc #theWorkshop

first cuts in steel were going great at firsthost program froze (idk why), so i shut off the spindle and hit disconnectthen hit reconnect, planning to manually move upward from there, and it attempted to pick up from there without promptingoops#cnc #theWorkshop
