       @vwestlife Alan Sugar (founder of Amstrad, and more recently the host of the UK version of a shitty 'reality' TV franchise) had a name for this: The Mug's Eyeful.https://www.theregister.com/2007/08/02/alan_suagr_nostalgia/Amstrad stereos were assembled in the UK, with the electronics all made (cheaply) in the Far East, and some of the cabinetry made in the UK; just enough to be able to claim that the whole thing was made in the UK.

       @vwestlife @themaritimegirl Or an "unconditioned line" in some countries.You'd have to ask the telco (which was usually the national PTT in most of Europe) for an "alarm circuit", because you were hooking up an old fashioned alarm system.Definitely not doing any data comms. Definitely don't want to buy an overpriced packet switched X.25 line for a point-to-point link. Definitely don't want to sign up for managed services on top of that.

       @vwestlife The 3-cylinder Charade was very popular in Ireland during the 1980s, when fuel shortages and high prices were a big factor. The Charade had better MPG than any other car at the time.

       @vwestlife I got a guided tour of a vinyl pressing plant when I was younger.They did cassette duplication upstairs. Source material came in on 1/4" tape reels from a mastering lab. High speed duplication was done on a set of Tapematic machines mounted in 19" racks. Each rack had some Dolby units, each one of which was very obviously not plugged in or powered on.I noticed that, and asked my guide why. I was told that everything gets set to "standard levels". All the staff laughed at that.
