@azonenberg Vulkan doesn't need a display server. You can create Vulkan instances and open physical and logical devices just fine, without a display server, or any other kind of graphics environment running.Vulkan is also a compute API, and it has been designed for fully headless operation.

@azonenberg so much I gathered.What I'm wondering is, if the JITed shaders crash, because they're derefing a pointer to something that's supposed to be managed by Mesa, or if the generated code or the JIT itself is buggy.llvmpipe is a Mesa driver after all, and my first hunch at eliminating that variable is by trying a different driver. If weird things still happen with a different driver, than is something broken in Mesa core. Otherwise it's isolated to llvmpipe driver internals.

@azonenberg Hmm… I wonder how difficult it would be to replicate your test harness on one of my machines. I have a pretty broad collection of Nvidia and AMD cards available for testing (although most of the Nvidia cards live in lab systems, but I could pull them in a pinch).

@azonenberg Interesting. It wouldn't be the first time Mesa catching the fallout of the libc and/or the libstdc++ doing something questionable that breaks LLVM, possibly related to threads.Back in 2021 I stumbled over something that broke Mesa's OpenGL texture handling, but eventually turned out to be glibc pthread implementation apparently being unaware that dlopen is a thing and thereby breaking LLVMs static initialization phase.

@azonenberg I'm still rocking my trusty S61.On that note: What would be a mostly equivalent replacement? Thermal camera is a must, but I also like its air monitoring capabilities (VOCs, humidity).

@azonenberg *lé sigh*I'm actually thinking of buying a Fairphone and modding it into a custom case milled from 7000 series aluminium designed to IP68 specs. And while doing so try to figure out how connect a thermal camera to it. Air quality monitor should be doable, they can be obtained with a I²C and there's always some I²C available somewhere.

@azonenberg same here, and the AQS seems to remain functional. At least it keep screaming at me bloody murder each time I'm dousing my hands in surgical disinfectant and roll some imaging system into the operating room.

@dalias @aeva I'll happily spend 40 hours a week doing science. What really grinds my gears is all the bureaucracy BS hustling for grant money. Just give me a lab and a yearly total budget of ~250000€ for buying stuff, paying contractors and paying my salary from, and allow me to carry any leftover into the next fiscal year. I'll churn out royalty free medical imaging tech.

@azonenberg Two years ago I had to solve a similar problem. Implementation details are subject of my PhD thesis. Cliffs notes version: instead of a rate think in terms of fractional interval lengths. Then map onto a skewed 2D grid, with truncated stride, and compensation for kerfed samples in calculation of sample address. 2D grid maps to in-period samples / periods.

@lobingera @masek You know what company I hold a fiece grudge on? Analog Devices.They've been gobbling most if not all of my second source suppliers for precision electronics circuits.These days I rather spend weeks designing circuits from discrete parts, around wide operational ranges, and if I really have to put an IC in there, it's going to be a part that has hundreds of similar performing replacements.

@azonenberg Hmm… I think the RAM argument is much stronger than the architecture one. Short of going with some server class ARM system, most ARM platforms are within the same order of magnitude of available RAM (including most Macs, excl. the discontinued Mac Pro)

@ariadne @whitequark That job is extinct already. Technically I am a researcher. However, instead of doing research I spend most of my working time doing staff software engineer tasks. It's absurd. My colleagues, who are not software developers, vibe code a crapton of one-off tools for simple tasks. I see the benefit for them, and am infuriated that the proper tooling is so underdeveloped.
