@mntmn I sometimes envy those who had access to such cool hardware back in the day. My family eventually got a PC but I wasn't allowed to do much more than write stories on it using wordperfect. I only really learned about computers once a neighbor lent me a laptop running DOS with a C compiler on a 3.5" floppy disk. He was nice but actually wrote missile firmware for the military... so in hindsight it was also weird to have started this way. Hopefully I can do good to counter some of the bad.

@mntmn There's something wonderful about machines with such limits. They still seem to have so much power even if we look and laugh at the specs now.

@mntmn I've preemptively trimmed one of my desktop environments to comfortably run in less than 300MB of RAM so I have some memory to spare for compilers ... but browsers eat the slack up so fast and then some. I wonder if this will kill the current era of memory hogging web apps?

@mntmn My own initial issue was some amount of caching seemed to give old firmware until many hours after release (refresh --force didn't see the new firmware and I was dumb and didnt notice it rolled me back from my own self-compiled firmware to 2025 releases). The following morning I used a rescue SD, repeated refresh, and it saw the 2026 firmware and installation worked. Booting was otherwise completely broken (couldn't get to an interactive tty).

@mntmn I think its become the default excuse for fare dodgers. I wonder if the few honest mishaps get drowned in the piles of people making up stories? I still think it's unjustified to raise the fee. Especially if you have been paying for the regular fare and show any history of paying for tickets (evidence of good behavior). For those who rarely buy tickets ... I feel like they should perhaps be seen with this kind of skepticism.

@mntmn @lislegaard @andypiper If you sell one I'll buy. Once the new quasar and mb2 get paired I was planning on a DIY home server. I can't justify an MNT Station right now (not that I don't want it) but I could justify a nicer enclosure.

@mntmn I still love the area (nobody messes with my anti-ai stickers I put up either). xhain is expanding, I just don't know if I have the energy to fight people who think AI is a general good. I do have ideas I'm working on to create some space for things that necessarily exclude ai by design but that's the caveat. I think taking up space anyway is still good.

@mntmn I've been thinking about the overhead of unicode text on these constrained devices. It's easier when you can assume everything will fit in a byte but so much text gets cut out and so many fonts with it. Text being so limited is maybe my biggest complaint with trying to shove things into uxn. Someone built an engine that prebakes Japanese kanji but that assumes you have a fixed corpus. I wonder what the minimum spec really is for truly international access.

@mntmn Most of your competitors aren't even a fraction as open as you are anyway. The enclosure's grid is one of the more exciting aspects of the next even if it also looks sleek and modern.

@mntmn I've enjoyed the way my Keychron Q9+ keyboard's rubber gasket assembly works. It'd be tricky but I wonder if it could still be applied to a low profile keyswitch mount without too much added thickness?

@mntmn @holo_memory I'll try and pack the keyboard I mentioned next time I drop by. I don't use it as much now as I find it hard to constantly adjust between different travel depths (maybe I just suck at typing) but I really enjoy it when I want a full-travel mech keyboard.
