@cwebber I think maybe you missed https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/mar/04/scotus-deny-cert-dc-circuit-thaler-appeal-llm-ai/ where #SFC analyzed that situation? Also, follow @ai_cases & see the *firehose* of litigation on this & remember the “Work Based on the Program” issue under GPLv2 has still never been litigated directly but lots of cases about 100% proprietary software have bolstered GPL's strength.Big Content has legal battles with Big Tech on 100s of fronts rn. Yes, we're adrift on their sea, but the situation is not as dire as you imagine.#AI #LLW

I should mention, that I basically ignore comments from anyone who doesn't upload a profile picture. Like, I'm totally ok if the picture is just #0000 or #ffff all the way through. But if I see that default Mastodon elephant, I am immediately suspicious that you may be trolling me (even if you aren't).Please, people, put *some image* there: a cartoon, a single color, your favorite pop culture character, whatever.Makes a huge difference to those of us who get @-mentioned 50 times a day.

@RichardJActon The copyleft-ish hack I propose is *we* (FOSS community) assume that any output of an LLM-backed genAI system *is* copylefted (since we are pretty sure all such systems — at least those designed for software development assist — have been trained on copylefted codebases). Then, we copyleft any work that comes out of the system. The only threat is proprietary software in the training set, & the industry can't abide enforcing *that*!@cwebber @ossguy @richardfontana @evan@kees

@sjn Corrected. Since the post Denver wrote talked about November *2025*, I had 2025 on the brain when I posted.I confirm that time travel is *not* required to attend these public fora.

@wwahammy I have always been against calling violation of a copyleft license a criminal offense. It's too harsh & it's wrong. I realize the DMCA might technically make it true, but the DMCA is a bad law & should be repealed.I never pegged you as a fan of the criminal penalties under DMCA, but you're correct that maybe the very few people who have attempted copyright-washing with LLM's may have violated those DMCA terms. But I still think it should be a civil, not criminal, legal matter.

I'm busy w/ FOSS, so my spouse just told me about this week's #ATC (Air Traffic Control) story. It made me miss Kennedy Steve (search him, lots of funny audio) who worked #JFK would have just rolled with it like this:> “So, uh, we're going to be delaying approach of all flights that are piloted by domestic pets. When, uh, Delta XXXX and American YYY, uh, have humans on the flight deck, please contact tower on .245” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rjf5rc0ILa4Cc: @robin @chrisjrn whom I know are into:#aviation

@lumi asked:> > “can a gnome developer and a kde developer ever truly be in love?” The six months age difference might be insurmountable.(Sorry, this is a VERY old-school KDE/GNOME joke. In case folks don't know it: there was this big thing in the first few years of GNOME that KDE had started six months before GNOME, and therefore GNOME could “never catch up”. Almost 30 years later, this is a really silly argument.)

@EuCaue I realize that most people people that I talk to on a daily basis were still young children when this was a common joke.I'm a bit surprised the “Year of the Desktop” joke has lasted from 1998 to today. The six month joke didn't make it, except in my own mind.Cc: @lumi

All #FOSS developers need therapy. No, I'm serious. We *must* end petty one-up-manship & virtuoso knowledge-signalling.A few years ago, one of the most prominent #OpenSource developers of our age gleefully told me how he dressed down a young, inexperienced junior developer at a code review at his company. WTF!?!Deal with your insecurity about yourself & don't roll your 💩 downhill to the next generation. For me, only in my 0x32's am I able to brush that off.Be kind to Padawans.#FreeSoftware

Am I the only person who, after 30 years of using `/bin/ln`, *still* gets its arguments backwards? If I type: $ ln -s x yMy mind is always thinking: “I want a symlink where x ⇒ y”, and as such I incorrectly put the destination *before* the source.I am sure `ln` is this way in #POSIX to match the behavior of `cp` & `mv`. The latter two are intuitive to me because I read it as “copy/move x to y”. $ ls -l y lrwxrwxrwx 1 bkuhn bkuhn 1 May 2 14:39 y -> x“y ⇒ x” … See!?!?!#Unix

@lanodan wrote:> “With -s I'd more compare the behavior [of /bin/ln -s] to chmod/chown given it's non-mangled and so relative to the symlink location, you write the link target (1) into a symlink file (2).” That's a good point. Ultimately, a symlink is not really a file in the way humans think of them. (And literally is *not* “regular” file under #POSIX).

@idlestate Fascinating! I don't remember one lick of 6502 Assembly, but perhaps it warped my programming brain in a manner that is completely subconscious.🤔 Cc: @spacehobo @lanodan @shrub900

@carmenlisandrette re: ssh/scp w/ the -p and -P.Oh, geez, yeah! 😠I *quit* using `scp` *entirely* at least 20 years ago. Since then, I just always use `rsync` (with `-e ssh <args>` when needed) even when `scp` would do just fine for the purpose. & I do that *precisely* because of `scp`'s -P/-p mess!re: USB cable: I don't mind that when 2x works. However, some ports that I regularly plug/unplug require a bit too much pressure even when properly oriented, then I do need 3+x retries & 😡.

Frankly, #Reddit is truly horrible. So, I've had a reddit account as `BradleyKuhn` for 10 years. I use it extremely rarely — just when some major #FOSS issue ends up having most of its discussion on some reddit thread.Apparently reddit shadowbanned me 8 months ago, and I didn't even notice. All my posts since then didn't really show up, even though it looks to me like they do.I talked with a regular redditer, & apparently this is standard practice.Shadow banning due to inactivity? WTF?

I logged into #reddit for 1ˢᵗ time in 4-6 months b/c it's the central location for discussion of #BambuLabs #AGPLv3 violations.I wanted to do a reddit #AMA on #Bambu, as so many on reddit are talking about the violations & #SFC's response.BTW, hen I logged in, I saw a “sponsored AMA” from Terminix about common pests.I'm sure if I paid reddit whatever 💰💰💰 they gave, I'd be able to do as many AMAs under a non-shadow-banned account as I want.Capitalism ruins everything. I love #Fediverse.

There is a very very very tiny group of people who will get this joke, but hopefully all of them are on the Fediverse / Mastodon. The joke requires that you be a MSTie & have some working knowledge of the German language.About 10 months ago, I named my mobile device, a Pixel 3a running LineageOS: “Manos: The Handy of Fate”.The battery is nearly gone on it, and I've already decided on the name of my next mobile device: “Manos: Das Handy of Fate” #Manos #Deutsch #German #MST3K #Rifftrax

I've settled into the term LLM-gen-AI to specifically mean generative #AI that is backed by a Large Language Model.I am not trying to coin a new term. In this case, the terms have been manipulated & abused by the ballyhoo and I'd rather be precise about what specific constellation of tech I mean.I also worked briefly in graduate school on a generative AI project that *did not* use an LLM, & a colleague was working on a LLM that had no generative properties (just gave binary answers).

In a policy statement¹, @conservancy said:> “#FOSS projects should not shun contributors who choose to use LLM-gen-AI systems.”@dalias' reply:>> “LOL WTF NOPE. 🤡”While it was surely unintentional, your reply is quite similar to the cruelty of traditional #FreeSoftware rhetoric — wherein we shunned people for *using* #Apple & #Microsoft. Such users deserve sympathy and help toward more software freedom.Same goes for #LLM-backed generative #AI users.¹ https://sfconservancy.org/llm-gen-ai/llm-backed-generative-ai-recommendations.html#OpenSource

@lumi commented on https://sfc.ngo/llm-gen-ai-recs saying:>> “i would really like to see a stronger stance against these dehumanization machines, honestly..”I spent much of my early #FreeSoftware career taking ridiculously unpragmatic stances, while also hating myself b/c I wasn't #FOSS-pure enough. In response to that, I developed a philosophy to “use the tools of the oppressor against the oppressor” — which I had learned from #copyleft cf: this article I wrote recently:https://sfconservancy.org/blog/2026/jun/02/ethical-use-proprietary-develop-free-software-foss/

@ariadne This is great idea. I recall years ago there was a FOSS last.fm replacement, but it was not fully federated.Key feature to me would be a discovery method to find DJs I like and be able to voluntarily give them a small payment when I like a channel.
