I just rewatched the Pride & Prejudice miniseries with Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle, & I still love it (really, the psycho-sexual politics of the whole thing are just crazy) BUT it does hit different when I think about the fact that all the wealth comes from the British Empire plundering the wealth of other nations & enslaving people.All that wealth was not generated in England.

Ohhhh!If someone asks you questions about something you don't want to talk about, you don't have to give deflections & partial explanations.You can say "I don't want to talk about that."It's possible they'll think you're rude. But you aren't obliged to explain yourself simply because someone asks.My friend was asking me questions about something she didn't know was a sore subject, & I kept giving partial answers, & she kept asking. I could have just said I didn't want to answer. Huh.

I try to manage people's expectations all day every day.Now that I'm trying to stop doing that, I'm finally realizing the extent of it, & it almost scares me.It also explains why I feel I can't relax unless I am totally alone.

Spouse is having a terrible time with "customer support" for his Nothing Phone.His charging port is failing, & he sent an email to customer service. He was told that he has a Beta test phone that has no warranty. He was not aware of this. The website mentions a 7 year warranty.The responses to his messages appear to be AI garbage. No one is actually reading his messages & the answers seem automated.#NothingPhone

How is pressuring women to be rail thin with flat bellies compatible with trying to pressure them to have babies?In the church culture I was in, yes, thin women were in some ways celebrated & extra special, but they couldn't really denigrate women with squishy bodies too much when they were trying to convince them they need to have 5-10 babies.How is heroin chic compatible with "oh no, the birth rates"?

So...My ex-boyfriend lied about his age on OKCupid (said he was 10 years younger than he actually was). We wouldn't have matched at all otherwise, because I set my upper limit to 12 years older than me, & he's 20 years older.At some point after we started dating, he dropped his age into a conversation, & with the way he did it, I was confused & felt embarrassed for having been wrong.There was a lot of bullshit where somehow his dishonesty or boundary-pushing made *me* feel embarrassed.

I watched a video of someone asking their AI assistant if they should drink from a "water bottle" they found, which was in fact a bottle of bleach.The AI did exactly as expected: "you go, girl! Drink from that water bottle, you super genius!"It's concerning, of course, that this "tool" people are being told to trust is worse than useless, but frankly it was how much pointless, silly praise the bot was spitting out that really disturbed me.

The subtext/metanarrative that I believe is bothering me with Supergirl reviews is that if I like something, I have to spend lots of money on it & get all my friends to spend lots of money on it.As though I should be doing the marketing for the films I like because otherwise they will be a "failure" & I won't get any more films like that. And as though it is normal & natural to decide the value of a piece of art based on what "most people" are willing to spend money on.
