@AminiAllight Hello darkness, my old friend,I've lost my triangle again. Were the vertices all meeting?Do the stencil ops need tweaking?Did the whole thing,Get removed by a backface cull?Or was it null?Oh no it's just behind us.(by Paul Malin: https://bsky.app/profile/p-malin.bsky.social)

This weekend, Subnautica is free to play, and it and the full-sized sequel Below Zero are both 75% off to buy. If you have not tried these you absolutely should - I recently replayed them both and they're still so good.https://store.steampowered.com/app/264710/Subnautica/

The one thing to watch about Subnautica 1 is it starts rather slow, and you're kinda struggling the whole time because you don't really know what you're doing. Finally at some point it clicks, Plot happens, and then it's a much more fun game. Try to get past that first bit - it's really worth it.

Revision 2026 PC demos. It's long, but don't be afraid to use that fast-forward button, and remember they're sorted roughly by quality, so make sure you at least watch the last few!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lw4W9V57SKs

Loads of other competitions - limited-space ones, live-coded ones, graphics-only, sound-only, etc - on their YT channel - go check it out.A category I am personally fond of - the fantasy consoles! A great way to experience the limits (and low expectations!) of old machines without quite so much frustration.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=49YjC8dWdqE

Is there any reason NOT to use a (nearly) infinite clip plane in D3D? You can just pass something big like 2^80 as the far clip plane into the standard projection generator and it spits out basically the right thing. It's odd that more people don't know about "just set the far clip to infinity". Just don't know, or is there some real reason to avoid it?

UPDATE: can people please stop guessing! I know how Z buffer precision works and how it is non-linear. I built GPUs. I remember the times when we used 24bit and 16bit depths. If you do not know/remember all that stuff, please stop guessing!FYI it is the NEAR clip plane that determines most of the precision. Once your far clip plane is 10x your near clip plane, pushing it to literal infinity is a very small loss of precision.I am looking for people to tell me why NOT to do this. With numbers.

@stellarskylark It's quite annoying to use in practice because of those limits. For the F35 the companies campaigned long and hard to be able to use a highly restricted subset of C++, because Ada was too difficult.I'm not kidding, it's literally called the "Joint Strike Fighter Air Vehicle C++ Coding Standards". That's how much they disliked Ada :-(
