       wait, if memset sets memory data, and a pointer is often zero in memory but isn't guaranteed to be, and only is in code, and a pointer being created pointing to unknown data is ub, does that mean memsetting

       @navi honestly gnu should have seen nobody uses info despite how much they push it, and bit the bullet to switch the doc to manpagesi do agree with them info is better than manpages, but everyone is used to manpages, so

       @fiore the main thing is gnu isn't a monolith, some parts are bad, some are good, removing dependencies purely because gnu is in the name is not a good strategy

       @ska @lanodan like if a compiler for a language i use is written in some fuckass language i'm not contributing, selfhosting i guess guarantees that if someone is interested in contributing to a compiler for a language, then they're fine with that language, and already know it, but that's imo a pretty weak argument because other languages are fine enough too

       @ska @lanodan @kirtai what i plan to do for my functional lang (eventual) is have a small interpreter, probably written in c, whose only goal is to be somewhat hackable and compatible, not particularly fast or smart beyond what's needed by language directly, and have a compiler for it written in that very languageiirc that's what guile does ?

       @lanodan @rose yea, i have no idea how to actually make a kernel, i would just run into a wall and lose my teeth. i'd learn a ton, and be able to wreck myself into walls more efficiently, but getting to something worth anything would take a while

       @lanodan @rose and existing kernels aren't great either bc those that are reasonably well documented are education projects which from my experience tend to put some architecture specifics or assumptions for simplicity
