Oof.. media storage bill (Wasabi) is getting close to €400 a month😟And that's only photos, videos and audio filesBiggest one are the servers between €1100+ a month with the hardware increased priceAnd there's mail! :neocat_laugh_sweat: Running somewhat larger services costs a lot of money kids.. ❤️

Kinda “funny” I guess in some way..Back when I started “web dev” when I was about 10 or something everything had to be free 😆 Free hosting, free domain, free email!That was kinda the thing in our script kiddie community, imagine spending money online as a kid!Nowadays server bills, domains, email costs more than our rent, barely but still :blobcatgiggle:

@stux kind of both. I assume that you have both a baseline cost for "any person that has signed up" along with estimated costs for both "typical" posters and "prolific" posters.I assume it's not one number, I'm more interested in what any of those numbers look like from a sustainability perspective.

@stux I have being looking up information about Mastodon and how it stores the media, I know it compresses the images and convert gifs into videos, but I don't see anything about deduplication.I have ZFS with dedup enabled but only 1.2 TB with somewhat good federation.

@stux @gatesvp And what about asking for one cent per user per month and you are not only getting your costs covered but making a good living with that? 🤔Of course you have additional costs for getting and managing the money part, but wouldn't that be an idea to make your instances more sustainable?
