would you consider disclosure of somebody else's conflict of interest (e.g. they work for a company owned by an AI datacenter company and they are pushing a pro-AI policy, their employment status knowable by anyone willing to spend 3 minutes on LinkedIn) to be "doxxing"?

@ariadneVoted no, but that is provisional upon them using their real name in all places involved, and no location aside from job is exposed.

my choice to describe that conflict of interest was described as doxxing by someone advocating for a pro-AI policy 🙃to the point that he made sure to call it out in his response to the questionnairebut this seems like bullshit because if he genuinely believes it is doxxing -- why not request a code of conduct investigation?and this bullshit is why I think this year's alpineconf will be a bookend for me.

@ariadne how do I put this... The IRL name is exactly reserved for work and work related issues. The whole point of the nickname is that you do not own your own IRL name for *personal* conversations on the Internet. Because every time you discussed overwatch porn or whatever it would be seen by your employer and your son's university admissions board. So no, you don't get to be anonymous when in the body of governance of a large nonprofit.

@ariadneThey do know full well what they're doing there. And they want to hide it. Otherwise they'd publicly announce their conflict of interest.Which makes it so much more important to make the conflict of interest known.Actually, for me it's a conflict of interest to have to decide between protecting a person and making their conflict of interest known [at least to those who should know about it]… 😉

anyway, here are the results from the questionnaire: https://gitlab.alpinelinux.org/alpine/council/-/blob/master/minutes/2026-08-09-ai-developer-poll.mda large question I have: the report was authored on 2026-08-09, but was just published yesterday. why did it take so long? why did I have to ask about the report in order for it to be published?my guess is that alpine will allow AI, despite the position that it should be banned being strongest (but not strong enough to meet a plurality).same outcome as Debian, basically.

@ariadne lmao. no. disclosing someone's conflict of interest isn't anywhere close to what doxxing actually is (posting their full name, phone number, and/or home address publicly). words mean things.

@ariadne The only reason why I did not participate was that I couldn't, because I do not have merge access.Do I regret not pushing more to get merge access? Yes, I do. In retrospect, I think "they're already annoyed with me, I don't want to be pushy" was the incorrect approach, and I shouldn't have been scared to appear pushy.

@ariadne doxxing means publicly linking different identities as a single physical person. If the AI job identity is the same as the one promoting AI, then doxxing simply isn't relevant. Now when people don't know what to say they usually tend to generate tokens in a higher temperature fashion, outputting mostly noise to "have the last word"

@ariadne the fact there is even a yes % is most likely a misunderstanding. The reason all companies have processes that mandate disclosure of conflicts of interest and require this conflict is sufficiently mitigated is because it is a mechanism that protects the group from foreign interference and interests. If you don’t disclose that then you made a choice to support the unmanaged conflict, the mature thing is to evaluate formally. If someone is against that they are free to stop interacting and leave as they clearly do not want to deal with this process, and this is a binary decision. The arguments come after the conflict is established and are going to be on the how to deal with the conflict effects.

@ariadne Name, employer, job status isn't doxxing. My info is searchable as a former public schools and college employee for 16 years, since federal transparency laws made that info a part of public domain. My home address and contact info past city and state? Yeah, that would be doxxing since that isn't searchable, but it didn't sound like you did that.

@ariadne Would love to see way more projects add mandatory CoI disclosures to Codes of Conduct. This stealth marketing has been pervasive and harmful to communities. And not just that they work for such and such a company, but any measures the company is using to incentivize it, like counting it as a plus for performance evaluation, counting it toward minimum token quotas if those are still a thing, etc.

@sertonix when measured directly, it ranked first behind abstain. support for some form of ban (4+2+1) outranks abstain (6) which won. but because ban was split across 3 options, it failed to achieve a plurality.

@sertonix @erincandescent the questionnaire was not a ballot, eligible developers were asked to respond with prose.however I am certainly qualified to know what conditional means here, as I am the one who responded for a conditional ban, specifically proposing banning the use of commercial models for sovereignty reasons.the risk in my opinion is that the commercial models can be taken away at any time, thus encouraging compliance with the whims of the oligarchy which subsidizes access to them.

@sertonix @erincandescent it is a ban on the thing I care most about in particular: the ability of the commercial vendors to exert pressure on the project.I do not think there are many applications for LLM technology in alpine that are not handled better by some sort of deterministic automation.
