TIL after 70 weekly comics:Drawing faster, or a faster painting technique doesn't necessary lead to a better productivity and good ratio of artworks I love compared to my time spent on them with my stylus in hand. But I did the mistake of believing this, stubbornly, and for long. However, a boring technique, even slower, but one you can split in steps, trust, and predict, eliminates many bottlenecks: freezing, endless redos and stress. This leads to a better productivity and peace of mind.

@davidrevoy The overall concept applies to a lot of life. It's rooted in laziness one way or the other. You take shortcuts to speed up the process and end up screwing yourself. Like trying to get all the groceries in one trip. You overload yourself, and drop the stuff causing more work, when you would've been done if you just walked it one more time. It's a lesson that isn't easily learned. You know better, but the siren song of labor savings is a constant presence.

@davidrevoy a lot of my art is process based too, but technical. a little 10 second animation from several rendering passes, 1000's of images gigs in size, compositing them, then making a gif or movie.theres lots of waiting and making sure you dont make a mistake along the way :neocat_laugh_sweat:

@davidrevoy I didn't think about you doing weekly comics for that long. You've been doing great with it. I think when I tried doing weekly art it just felt too corporate and I couldn't put my heart into it, but you seem to be doing well. Though maybe it's because I don't have as good of an idea what MY ART is if that makes sense.

@TopazRabbit Same, with all the timelapses I recorded (same capture intervals; fps) I could better see that spending more time at sketching (and redoing/fixing only at this step), makes inking way quicker, it also produce better volumes, and so it makes shading also faster, because no paint-over necessary to post-fix flat volumes. So, starting slow (esp at layout/sketching phase and prototyping) saves time in final. And here, for long, I so tried to crunch or get rid of this step!

@davidrevoy You can get better at surmounting obstacles, but it doesn't take long until it becomes more effective to remove them instead.

@davidrevoy The silver lining of mistakes...I suppose it's all part of the process, but the lesson gets learned, and you gained something bigger as a result.And... I don't think there's such a thing where you stop practicing. I doubt if we will ever say that we've practiced ourselves into being perfect.

@davidrevoy @TopazRabbit This is the case in many disciplines: making adjustments and fixing issues early is cheap, but fixing them late is very expensive.

@davidrevoy I really hate trying to be faster in so many things in my life. I don't draw, but I do several fiber crafts, programm and occasionally cook cakes. And in each of these I feel that trying to hurry or being hurried makes think more erratically, make stupid mistakes and disproportionately tire more. That said, I live in... a capitalism world and make this mistake every now and then.

@davidrevoy Should have used causal profiler first.Joking.Still, it's like seeing caveman rediscover that typing faster will not make you write programs faster.
