I need a bigger desk so I can also have a space set up with my microscope and also so I can keep my tablet set up, and also keep all my test equipment close. At this point I very well might need to just design and build my own desk...

It would need to have part of it that is a 24U? 32U? rack so I can rack up all the equipment I need along with my desktop and have it all out of the way.Would also need some custom racking for my 9-track tape drives to live in too I don't have rack kits for the kennedy and the IBM is benchtop mode

Would also want some overhead rigging for lights and my mic, and to hook my DSLR to for overhead PCB shots and the like.

I kinda also want to build an automatic X-Y-Z stage for taking focus stacked large scale stitched photos of large PCBs,Hook it up with a DSLR and tethered shooting and bam, do lense distortion calibration at each Z height, you could get some *really good* images out of that I think

would also need some fairly bright diffuse overhead lights.I think that could be fun to build!

For reference I think the largest PCB I would like to put in this would be, mmm, roughly 44cm x 44cm,So assuming the camera is mounted in the middle, X-Y travel would need to be ±22cm, meaning the whole thing would need to be at least 1m x 1m of desk space, which is, big, lol.

and maintaining ideally sub-mm positioning over that span will be, expensive, lmao.

@lethalbit FWIW I built a bunch of my office furniture from 3030 aluminum extrusion and it would tick a lot of your boxes. I build everything around a 50cm distance between legs (and thus a 56cm depth overall), and I made up some rack ears to fit 19" equipment in. Making one of the back legs absurdly long let me attach a 50W (actual) light and I'm putting a few eurobin 'shelves' under my workbench as soon as parts ship in this weekend

@multioculate yeah, the primary issue I have is that I tend to plop a bunch of heavy equipment (~80-140kg) on my work surface, and even 4040 would struggle with that if not braced correctly and closely, also ough, expensive.

@lethalbit For extrusion, using gusset plates rather than the little cast brackets helps a lot with heavy loads. You could switch to 3060/4080 for the long spanning pieces, to further cut down on flexing. If you've just been looking at Amazon or AliExpress, Misumi or Zyltech usually have better prices if you're stateside, though tariffs have definitely hit prices pretty hard

I was thinking about this again and pondering how it would be best to do the X-Y translation, and I figured, rather than needing all the extra space on the sides to ensure we get full board swing, just move the X-Y up to the DSLR mount, then you don't need an extra 22cm of space around the edge

At this point it's basically building a large 3D printer, I guess, lmao. But the "hot end" would need to be much more robust to handle moving the DSLR around,

Actually, basing it of something like the VORON 2 would work out really well.Especially as the configurator lets you set the "build volume"Adjust that, get the BOM, and then just ignore all the printer-specific stuff and modify the gantry for the DSLR.This might be a winning plan.

Yeah, so, ditch the build plate and side panels, modify the gantry and controller, hack up the firmware, and it should be golden, ez-pz
