AI is TERRIBLE for the #internetIf we like it or not, traffic has always been the currency on the web. Many news outlets and #journalists would not be able to do their work without itA lot of this traffic was coming from search engines like #Google, again like it or not. Nowadays Google uses their AI to pull info from sites making visiting websites for info obsolete and in turn killing traffic and a lot of sitesFor the love of the internet, please DO NOT use the #AI summary but browse!♥️

Recently I saw a TED talk and someone purposed this wasn’t all that bad and there would be a ‘new business model’He said something like:“In the future instead of ads, we could sell data to AI companies to complete their models”This is no solution whatsoever. Most LLMs are trained on stolen data to begin with that cannot be forgiven. Also imagine a world where a few AI companies are suppose to pay the rest of us to complete their models so they can sell it back againWTF

@stux True! I wasn't aware of that problem until I came to your post. However, there is no way to deactivate Google's summary feature. It appears automatically after a request. And since I don't use Google to browse, but to find information, I won't save time ignoring the output of the search engine of my choice.So, yes to information, but the effect of your call to action is questionable. That's basically the message I wanted to convey to you. ❤️

@stux let me put it another way. The AI summaries are very often hot garbage. If you use one, click on the links it gives you as the sources of the information to verify that it got it right in the first place.

@stux Have to use duckduckgo nowadays, google has become totally garbage for any technical research.Searches don't give anything but repeated, popular, selling based, clever-clever answers that aren't of any use whatsoever. No point even going for more results, you just get a repeat of more garbage.

@stux I tried to fill in a survey for a local business today and partway through the survey it told me "please wait while we generate your question based on your previous answers" and it stalled because I block the F* out of generative AI sites by keyword. That might be the model they're referencing?I sent the survey company a strongly worded email in disgust and blocked them from sending me further surveys. Alienating your customer base certainly is an interesting business model.

@stux A vast majority of people here get this, however how do we convince the masses of this when a lot of people are already thinking facebook is the internet, google is the only search engine and microsoft are the only producer of operating systems, helped by the fact that the media are pushing all this and AI aggressive.

@stux I'm using duck duck %98 of the time with it's Ai completely off. But as I understand they get info from Google Search too. And I think Google making things harder to find on purpose to force their stupid Ai.
