       my dad literally spent *years* attempting to convince me that the psychiatrist which diagnosed me with autism as a child had somehow *brainwashed* me, that it was all some sort of conimagine coming out as trans to such a person?

       i feel for that kid.  i *was* that kid.  it was hell.  many people on treehouse knew me when i *was* that kid.  i was a mess, but at least i had IRC as an outlet.

       @ariadneI don't say the father did the right thing. I just say this: as a parent you sometimes also don't know how to react or handle a situation. My brother's daughter tokm time too to admit she was disappointed in boys, and chose to share hetr love with another girl. I won't say it was a shock, as you can see things (we all knew, and silently dropped hints to allow her to come out) ... You relate them.

       my original motive for pursuing a psych degree was to basically 'reprogram' my dad so that he would quit being a reactionary assholeand, actually, for a while it worked outbut his lifestyle of just eating junk food and drinking a 2-liter of coke every day caught up with him and he died of cancer while i was working on my master's

       in a way, i somewhat ponder if part of my gender dysphoria is from dealing with *that*like the level of very obviously crazy was so high that i'm pretty sure i was just like "nope, i want nothing to do with being a man if that's what it means"

       @ariadne Damn, sorry you had to go through that. 💔 I had a surprisingly similar arc, but with less trauma. IRC was a similar escape; I moved to the US at 19 because I felt like the country wasn't big enough for my father and I. Moved to North Carolina, crashed on the couch of some IRC buddies I never met, and somehow made it from there. If nothing else, the two of us ended up with a very different perspective than the typical industry folks.  Those years are why. I'm so glad you're here.
