       @ariadne um, was inspircd the predecessor to solanum, in freenode history, or something like so? I remember seeing it somewhere in some motd somewhere, but can't remember which popular networks used it; if any.

       @toots no.  freenode (andrew lee's version) *now* runs inspircd, but previously ran a customized branch of charybdis which basically turned into solanum later.  freenode never itself ran solanum though.charybdis was the next-generation generic replacement for hyperion, which was essentially an emergency fork to fix dancer-ircd's scalability and reliability issues at any cost, including "load-bearing memory leaks".

       @ariadne @toots The fact that "load-bearing memory leaks" is a sentence that exists is the reason why I will never run any kind of IRC software on my server, unless and until I can find the time and motivation to write one from scratch myself.

Everything I've (over)heard about IRC broadcasts the vibe that it's the domain of l33tness and serious hacking and five star programming (which means there's a place where you dereference a pointer five times in a row).Maybe the vibes are obsolete.

       @ariadne Well, I was preparing some Fine Legacy Equipment for sale, popped in a demo disk to test sound and video, and there was a nasty cracking sound as the machine got overexcited and turned into ewaste. Demoscene coders, grr. I should have popped in a word processor and watched it commit suicide out of boredom instead.
