@stefan Well, I'm not sure if this is as affected by AI as other stuff. VR has just always been an expensive hobby

@stefan Honestly doubt it.They'd have to sell it at zero margins or a loss like Meta does with their Quest headsets.

@stefan Although I do at least think that the ergonomic accessories should've just been included in the standard price. Selling those separately seems a bit nuts.

@stefan Well, I'm sure that without AI they might've gotten slightly under 1000€, like 950€ maybe. The closest equivalent headset I know of in terms of specs and features without being sold at a loss is probably the Meta Quest Pro, which cost almost 1500€. Although they lowered it to ~1000€ around the end of its life, presumably selling them at-cost to try and get rid of them.

@stefan VR has always had this problem, Meta's consumer lineup has set the expectation that a basic VR headset should be available for 400-500€, but that only works thanks to Meta dumping way too much money into it. The reality is that for such a price you can in most situations only get a tethered headset at. A standalone headset with what amounts to a high-end smartphone in it probably costs 700-800€ in production costs alone.Add controllers, software development and other accessories ontop of that, then you quickly hit 1000€ being the effective minimum a standalone VR headset can go for, even chinese brands struggle to get far below that price point. If you want a cheaper headset the answer is usually "Give in to Meta's platform, buy a headset that has to be tethered to a PC, or gtfo" (or buy a used headset i guess)

@kumicota @stefan Oh neither can I, they won't sell it to us filthy Norwegians.I had to go off of third-party screenshots.

@quad @stefan I would expect it to be cheaper but considering that it's an standalone and with good lenses and screen, it's on par with the non-subsided competition

@kumicota @stefan Yeah. I was hoping they'd somehow manage a great price. But unfortunately this is the "standard" price for a headset in this class.Honestly it might be low considering it has 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, but most competition often only has 8GB/12GB RAM and/or 128GB of storage.

@simon_m Norway is in fact left out, as always. I'm not yet sure if I can absorb the price of importing a Frame though.

@simon_m Most notably, LTT stated it currently can't stream from Linux, only from Windows: https://x.com/HardwareSteam/status/2098926136327594457I don't know how true this is. Hopefully false, but I haven't found any videos of people streaming from a Linux machine, all of these reviewers use Windows. If it really cannot stream from a SteamOS host, I won't even consider the headset until that gets fixed. I guess that's a question that'll get answered once more videos get uploaded, or after I find the time to go through more of the videos which have already been uploaded.Overall I'm not too happy with the reviews out so far, because most of them just review it as a standard VR headset with its features such as foveated rendering and the pass-through. But the reviews I saw yesterday had a severe lack of info about other stuff. Like the OS and using it standalone, at least nothing beyond "it can run a 2D platformer in a pinch I guess" or Alyx.

@simon_m I feel like the reviews must've all been rushed, where people had 3-4 days to play games and did little else.It mostly feels like they just read the spec sheets and stuff then gave their opinion on it as a regular VR headset. For example most reviews quoted Valve that thanks to Lepton you can sideload Android apks, and they expect those not using proprietary APIs to likely just work. However... nobody tried, everyone mentioned it, but I didn't see a single reviewer even attempt to actually stick an apk onto it.

@simon_m Thanks, I haven't watched LTTs review.I watched the ShortCircuit that leaked over the weekend, and I mostly only found time to skim/skip through like 4-5 reviews yesterday.Regardless I'm still waiting for more videos, particularly about the software-side of things before I decide on an opinion about it.It is quite tempting though. I've wanted a less privacy invasive standalone VR headset for years.

@lolitechengineer @stefan @kumicota Yeah, which is $999.Which is why I suspect the original target was $949.$1059 is expensive, but I don't think this one can be blamed on AI quite as much as people want to.
