       @aharoni @wikipedia Wait, why shouldn't we have a thing called "radio buttons" in 2026? Just because its origin is something that's no longer around? It sounds like the reasoning for replacing the floppy disk as a universal "save" icon. Icons are symbols! They just have to be distinguishable, the idea that they always have to be interpretable with innate knowledge seems backwards to me. If someone doesn't know what a floppy disk is, it's an opportunity to learn more about the world.

       @aharoni @wikipedia I was familiar with the term "radio buttons" from the very first time I played with Delphi and HTML in computer class, but had no idea they originated as physical controls in cars. Learning this little tidbit brought me joy. I just don't get this chase to always shrink the world to a smaller and smaller set of terms people "innately" understand from daily life. Nothing is really innate. We teach people what letters mean when they learn to read.

       @Gargron yes, it is comparable, but the floppy is universally recognized as a save icon even if few people today ever actually used floppies, whereas the *name* "radio button" has always been barely familiar to most computer users, even though everyone uses them in forms.I don't think that I'm going to change it by making little Fediverse posts. I just wish I had an easier way to talk about it to people. I keep regularly running into people who don't know what the name "radio button" means 🤷🏻‍♂️
