       actually, they did this 5 times under their "peaceful nuclear explosions" program3 out of 5 were successful, the other two were failures (one used too small of a nuke) or at least disputed as suchthe one in the video was the first well, at urtabulak in 1966there they used a 30 kiloton warhead at a depth of 1.5km deployed down a second borehole about 30m away from the blown out borehole

       @ariadne they also had a plan to nuke the mountain passes between Iran and Russia to prevent a Soviet invasion of Iran. The actual Iranians were never consulted, of course. Documented in Maj, David Crist’s excellent book “The Twilight War”.
