       @libreleah @leah to be fair, I have nothing against people writing garbage code, as long as they write it themselves. Writing garbage code is how you learn to write high quality code.

       @TheyCallMeHacked @leah i told my friend, the one in question, that i preferred when she wrote spaghetti code in a game she's working on. it reminded me of when i first started. i could see her thinking, in the code, and i could see the bits where she struggled. i saw all the if and else and repetition and such that could be consolidated into a simple while loop... and i saw a few bugs too, e.g. not checking lengths of inputs.but the code was hers.AI is sometimes used by experienced developers, and i've observed that it basically deskills the user. it's like when you're off for a while, and you struggle to get back into the groove, you're rusty, etc. AI permanently brings that feeling, if you use it. you stop thinking with it, and you start spending more time prompting it than actually doing work. i think it actually makes people less productive.it's sort of like taking drugs. the first hit is divine but then you're just maintaining addiction. AI is like that, but on productivity

       @TheyCallMeHacked @leah we already know that videogames and social media are addictive. that's why governments try to regulate those. i mean, AI is garbage anyway, and the chatbots like chatgpt will probably die off after the bubble bursts, so it's likely a moot point.the problem is i don't think AI is going away. i think the commercial viability of it will demonstrably fail, but then people will start running local models. training will continue, but people will start running AI themselves.computers get faster all the time, and memory will start becoming cheap again after the AI bubble crashes (so will house prices, as AI is tied into the US housing market and various industries, so the crash is going to cause the biggest global economic depression in human history)

       @libreleah @TheyCallMeHacked @leah Thats what I try to explain to others, with not much success. I am 25+ years in programming and I see the bad effects AI usage has on people writing code. But how can I convince someone of the bad AI influence that is decades away from reaching my level of experience? I literally would have to first convince them they are not that good at writing code yet, and then that using AI makes it worse and prevents them from getting better.
