       @dangillmor I recently got a notification from Microsoft that age verification will be necessary in Australia for buying/using games ...Makes one wonder how bad some of the games are ...

       @dangillmor Danish authorities have released an app for age and identity verification which stores data locally (presumably some kind of public/private key certificate) and only discloses the minimum when used. Of course minting the certificate relies on a national database of identities, but that database has existed since 1968.        @dangillmor they don't even need to hack anymore, criminals can just... buy the data for cheap from brokers, as if it were a dime store hooker with a discount.

       @dangillmor Personally, I dun think the verification itself is the issue...The issue is how and what data is transferred and stored.If it was all just an attest that "yes, this person is indeed above 18" (not the exact birthdate  just 18+ or not 18+), there isn't that much that I'd personally argue against.It's the storing of the ID, name and other information that makes it shite.The service only needs to have the "yes/no" from a trusted provider... Nothing more.

       @dangillmor read a suggestion that all network packages should be marked with an age requirement. Then network drivers could reject packages not allowed for a device. The setting of device age should then be controlled by parents/guardians. This way no one need to prove anything and there is full freedom in families to control what data to allow.
