       @ariadne With tickets to the rides purchased in advance, or not required? (Commerce on Shabbat is strongly frowned upon - the reform rabbinate disapproves, while others bar it outright. The Web site for Hasidic-owned B&H Photo stays online during Shabbat and other holidays, but won't take orders.)

       @ariadne @dysfun One might argue that the fridge light turning on/off is only a side effect of what they're actually doing (opening a door)—a side effect that they arranged to happen before Shabbat began.

       @ariadne If pneumatic mechanisms are okay but electrically-powered ones are not, I don't even know what to tell you.If you're going with the spirit of the law, then activating a powered machine of any kind, or at least making non-trivial effort to do so, is forbidden.If you're going with the letter of the law, then neither of those involves fire. Pneumatics is based on fluid pressure and electricity is artificial lightning.
