It's like with dealers: the first shot is free (you get 1 year free access). By then you're hooked, and have to pay – often more than you can afford (token price exceeds budget). By then, you no longer understand your codebase sufficiently enough to handle it properly yourself. 🪦So be very careful what you do there, especially with the BigTechStuff (as usual). And even more if you pretend to be a Guardian of FOSS. Some angels have fallen already. Let's limit that number.

@tjk That we call part of the app metadata. And we'd like to read human written texts there, yes ("if you didn't bother to write it – why should I bother to read?). And as that enters our servers, it falls under the "house rules".I should also be honest: the policy _currently_ applies to apps added after it was established, and other apps still have grandfathering protection. That won't be forever, though – but we're a small crew, so we have to ask for patience there… First start, then drive.

I switched from f-droid repo to your repo a few months ago because of your AI policy (and ofc because of f-droid's obtuse reasons to push AI gen into our throats - https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/work_items/641 )It took me many gen ai projects that I had to go to the source code to find out, to realize it was time for me to stop. At one point I think every new app I found on f-droid used AI gen...I hope that f-droid admins will someday realize that you can't have libre AI gen software... and that they're just breaking what they created over time (most importantly - trust)

It is easy to spot AI slop in code.For example, we get merge requests created with AI that are tightly focused. If we don't allow such things, we set ourselves up to be DDoSed by AI bots. They can spam a project with small, reasonable fixes that then cannot be merged when anything AI is banned. We'd have to do weird things to fix bugs just because of the ban

And often enough find the person providing the PR/MR, cannot explain the code either.Not saying this is the general case. But it happens too often to be ignored. And takes too much time to evaluate, from teams who are already short-handed.

As someone said in the issue: you cannot get the cat back into the bag, once it's out.Also, allowing non-disclosure, is poison there. If you do that, you can also close the issue about making LLM an AntiFeature – as that then would only blame those being honest about it.And yes, sometimes you have to do "weird things" to keep your project sane, unfortunately. And further, do not forget you can use the client also with many other repositories: other than it might seem at first glance, you can add them to it. Or check with alternative clients like Droid-ify (no-frill) and Neo Store (power-users), which even have a load of such repositories pre-configured – as below screenshots show.

For example, many developers run their own repositories for their apps. Or IzzyOnDroid, which covers ~1.4k apps at https://apt.izzysoft.de/fdroid We all use compatible technology. You don't throw away your web browser if you don't like its project homepage, do you? 😉TL;DR: you can use your favorite F-Droid client with a selection of repos YOU want (and without the others).

@GOKUSHRM There is an overlap indeed: some apps are listed in multiple repositories. Others are only in one (e.g. only in the dev's own repo, or only at F-Droid, or only at IzzyOnDroid). Depending on the developer's preference.And to answer the question between the lines: sometimes there are different builds, too – like, the APK at F-Droid having different features than the one at IzzyOnDroid. And sometimes, the dev's own might have proprietary components neither FD nor IoD allow.

And on update, the client does read it into its own database.Now, some math. Our index=13 MB, F-Droid's index=55 MB. What is the size difference if one "store" would have all the apps – compared to them distributed to multiple repos? What happens if one store has "issues"?

And hardly any counter-measure that's not also annoying for human beings.Also: "But that's fair use of public material!" – only to claim "theft of IP" when others use theirs. If that's LLM logic, how can I trust it?

@IzzyOnDroid @fdroidorg I agree. I wanted to limit myself to using only self-hosted LLM FOSS models to decouple from being dependent on big tech. But the hardware costs are scary. One should build collectives or clubs that share communally bought kit. But is that realistic?

Even without any moral, legal or other social implications, it is also simply practical to be able to filter out slop.If you require (frequently remotely hosted) non-free code in order to modify a piece of software, you can hardly call it "free". People who think otherwise would still have the freedom to opt into the anti-feature – as with all the others.
