@petrillic the really strange thing is that it was in a post that was quite negative on GenAI for more relevant & accessible reasons: the consolidation of power at the topi also still do not care about copyright because suing people costs money and the likelihood of recovering meaningful damages is low in most cases *shrug*

anyway, the reason why i am not moved by the moral argument around copyright and GenAI is very simple: generally, the GenAI companies have infinity times more money than the artists they are ripping off.which means making a copyright claim against a GenAI company is both expensive and unlikely to succeed unless you can afford the same lawyers they havewelcome to the US legal system: whoever has the most money tends to win civil litigation

@ariadne They seem to think that copyright enforcement is The solution to the AI bubble, which sucks. The only answer I could ever stand behind was that copyright as it is is a very imperfect tool to regulate the slop pipeline, but it can and should be used as a stopgap until we have broader reaching solutions. If someone thinks contemporary copyright doesn’t come out against the existence of generative models, I think there’s a real possibility they’ve misapplied the law to the tech. But as you point out there’s no resources to fight that fight.

@pikhq correct. copyright has been basically ineffective as a tool to constrain the GenAI companies, except when you can catch them pirating materials.

@ariadne I think I personally would frame things somewhat differently but I absolutely agree that the copyright argument is a losing battle. It’s obvious that copyright no longer has any use to capitalists and is now being swept away. Trying to get the powers to be to demur based on arguments from hypocrisy will always elicit a collective shrug of the shoulders and nothing else.

@ariadneI'm old enough to have read in a history book that copyright originally lasted for 7 years before a work became the collective property of humanity, but the wealthy corporations that buy up all the rights have extended copyright to around 110 years, give or take.🤷 A pox on both houses.
