       I muted the previous thread because a bunch of white men had to let me know why copyright is important to them.anyway, if you abolish copyright, the answer is not that nothing would replace it, but rather that you would impose a patent-like regime instead.

       @ariadne this is an interesting proposal, considering how every single person I know whose life touched software and hardware patents mentioned that they avoid ever looking at a patent lest they accidentally learn something from itbut maybe if we abolish patents for inventions and use a patent-like regime for art it would actually work?

       @whitequark yeah that's basically what I am thinking: we need patents for art, and something more like copyright for inventions (but not with 120+ year expiries for either, that is just ridiculous).

       @ariadne I think the thing you really want for inventions is UBI, not copyright; I don't see a copyright-like regime being of much use for people who actually do the inventionsperhaps if it was strictly limited to individuals with no possibility of reassignment or transfer. but that doesn't seem that useful either.

       @ariadne @whitequark Also, code and art (and innovations) are sufficiently different that perhaps they should be covered by different systems. We have copyright, patents and trademarks already because one system wouldn't work for all intellectual restrictions. Possibly code-like things should be separated out from the arts, giving us a fourth one.

       @luana on the fundamentals I agree but at the same time capitalism also needs to be abolished, and until that happens you need some sort of mitigation for creative works
