anyone know if there's any quality difference for blu-ray writers?do i need to secure myself one of those brand-name blu-ray writers before they all stop manufacturing them one day, or are the cheapo things on aliexpress for like a third of the price just as good

I have some totally legally obtained BDMV copies of japanese blu-rays on my NAS. But they're like 40-50GB per disc and consume a ton of storage. Re-encoding them all would be a catastrophe with the pitiful i3 in my server as well.So I'm considering just burning a bunch of them to BD-Rs before the format eventually gets taken behind the shed and shot.

@kumicota huh. i haven't heard of omnidrive until today. but my current DVD burner is a Hitachi-LG drive actually.No clue if it uses the required mediatek chipset though.

@kumicota not that it matters though, it's not a blu-ray drive.I have a Blu-ray drive, but it's only a reader (Asus SBC-06D2X-U). I only use it on the rare occasions where one of the discs I own has its VUK made public and I want to rip it.

@meowski Well, LG is a brand name, so I'd assume it works fine.I want to know if some 50€ generic off AliExpress will do the same or not

I have noticed another problem with this plan though. Nobody seems to sell dual layer 50GB BD-Rs anymore. The few places which still stock BD-R seem to only stock the single layer 25GB ones, which can't fit a blu-ray copy anyways.

@quad considering how expensive the blank discs are, how long they take to burn, and how annoying it is to lose your data, i would stick with a known brand personally. burning optical discs has always been an error prone process. but if you do try one of those let us know how it goes..

@kumicota I don't even know if there's a point to flashing my drive. Could be nice to play my own PS3/PS4 games using an emulator in the future I guess, but it's not super important to me instead of simply pirating a new copy instead.Do LibreDrive or OmniDrive somehow make it easier to rip a blu-ray movie or something? If all it does is let me read game discs I quite frankly don't have much of a need.

@kumicota @quad I can comfirm.for ripping 4k blu rays you don't need to flash libre drive too it, but im not sure if it still needs to be compatible to rip thoes disks. Least I think it was worth getting that Asus drive.

@Loyal @kumicota I don't even own a single 4K blu-ray. Anime series don't get 4K releases anyways.All I need is a drive that can rip 1080p video (which afaik, all of them do) and that can burn an already decrypted BDMV folder back to a disk.I just want to know if the Aliexpress drives are poo or not, because they're less than half the price of all brand name options.

@quad @kumicota unfortunetly that I do not really know.But its true you don't really need 4k support. I had to passifically buy a disk to test it 🥴Guess the question is if you think its worth the gamble or not. But I can comfirm an older HP blu ray drive I have can not rip 1080p BDs so that might be something to keep in mind
