       @IzzyOnDroid "Broke"/"break" as in "out of money" comes from "breken"/"brecan"/"brekan" Middle/Old English from Germanic. Those are the present-tense "break" forms; the past tense of the Germanic word was "bræc".While we typically only use the past-tense adjective ("broke") now, it used to be more common as a type of threat: that merchant is going to break that other merchant (financially).Meanwhile, we get "broker" as in "one who facilitates a financial deal or trade" via "brokour"/"brocour" from Old French "brocour" and Old Dutch "brokere". If we'd gotten the similar word from the Germanic lineage, it would be descended from "bruki"/"brukiz" instead.In conclusion, the French colonization of England strikes once again!
