On the one hand, one of the first questions I ask myself when using a new service is: “how do they make money off of this?” Because that’s how the modern world works’ fun isn’t really a reason anymoreOn the other hand, I am still surprised when I talk to people about Mastodon and the Fediverse and one of their first questions is: “how do you make money off of it?” And I gotta explain I do not and that I don’t do it for financial reasons but because I love it

An extreme case in this is the Apple App Store (I don’t know enough about PlayStore)Decades ago there where plenty of app and games that where free, no subscription, no ads and that also worked good (I also had a few of those!)Nowadays it’s almost impossible to find whatever app without in-app purchases, subscription or paywallsEVERYTHING needs to earn something it seemsAnd to be honest, I fucking hate it..

Another reason my app and games are always free is because I refuse to pay Apple even more..They already get €100 each year just for me to list my free stuff on their storesIf I where to charge for them or in-app purchases, Apple would take another 30% I believe on each transactionNo f-ing thanks

@stux So do I... I've even become totally allergic to commercials, paywalls and any subscriptions in whatever form... 😒

@Moaske I always scroll past the “in-app purchase” apps in the list that have that button knowing there is a subscription waiting

@stux Capitalism has devolved into something grotesque for the majority... It won't make it til the end of this century... 😉😏

@stux I 100% understand this sentiment, as someone who does sell an app with in-app purchases on the App Store. I’m really not sure where to stand on it. My approach is a one time purchase so at the very least Apple doesn’t get any recurring revenue (never mind the fact that a subscription doesn’t fit my app in the slightest). But even that feels gross on some level when I’m already paying the developer fee. 🫤

@stux I have some apps on the iOS App Store. One has an in-app purchase, but the app is perfectly useful without it, it's just limited to 3 'things' rather than about 5,000. I barely get any sales anyway, definitely not enough to cover the annual developer fee.Two others are free games that have been on the store since it launched in 2008, and I keep updating them for free. They do not and have never had ads because the user experience is horrible.

@stux I'm not sure who needs to hear it, but they're probably reading this thread... #Obtanium is a really neat alternative to the Google Play Store: if I understand correctly, I give it the URL to the git repository, and it can fetch the app and monitor for updates; the security-conscious crowd like this because it reduces dependence on a third party (like Google or F-Droid). So far I've got about a quarter of my apps through it.https://wiki.obtainium.imranr.dev/#FOSS #OpenSource #grapheneOS #degoogle
