       Another cool thing about the #Fediverse: IF (most likely NOT gonna happen) a major instance or smaller ones would be sold to whatever evil entity that wants to use it to influence our network……most of the rest of the Fediverse would simply block them and local users migrate to a different instance for exampleWhat I’m saying is, the Fedi cannot be bought by an evil billionaire 🤷

       @stux Now you've got me wondering about how evilBillionare would do a fediverse takeover.As you point out, buying an instance or 10 wouldn't do it.So, I think that leaves propaganda disinfo pushes (which we already see in the fake account spambots), building a recommendation algo that well-meaning people end up using and can be twisted, or building a big referer network / link sharing system, ala Flipboard or surf,  and getting people to use that instead of the native Fedi tools.Hmmmm ....

       @stux Yep. And we know this is true because it has happened. A significant chunk of fedi had threads blocked before it even existed. Many of us had to update those blocks when we finally figured out what the domain was gonna be because we started trying to block them so early we were just guessing what they would use!

       @stux Caution is still justified.  20 years ago we would never have thought email would be dominated by a few companies, and while you can still run your own mail server, it's a rarity these days.

       @stux What I'd like to see next as a mitigation feature against that is the ability to take a snapshot of my data so that if my instance is taken over I can use that snapshot to easily get set up on a new instance.My follows & recent posts at least.
