things i have experienced on fedi as a queer indigenous jew over the past whatever number of years (starting with GNU social on the indymedia instance, indy.im):- having my own culture explained to me by white techbros- having my own life experiences explained to me by white techbros- having my own spirituality explained to me by white techbros- having the status quo in fediverse moderation (read: basically, fucking nothing) explained to me by white techbros, despite having 20+ years of expertise in designing anti-abuse toolingand do not even get me started on the bullshit that is inter-instance politics

what i *will* say is that trolling (and other forms of unwanted behavioral abuse) are usually rooted in unmet needsengaging with trolls as people and trying to meet those needs usually reforms the unwanted behaviorthis is, of course, not your responsibility to do, but understanding this context would probably help fedi to become more inclusive and welcomingjust a thought

there will inevitably be some white folks who get offended by the idea that perhaps they might have something to learn *from the trolls* and that the correct answer is to keep throwing bans at the problembut actually, in many cases, that is what the trolls *want*they *want* to be banned because they have internal self-loathing, so being enough of a nuisance that they get fediblocked is something they see as an accomplishmentsuch is the psychology of trolling

@julie bans are for incident response. if you want to solve the underlying problem, it requires engagement.

@eloy anti-abuse technology is useful for many types of abuse. it is only useful for trolls in the form of incident response.if you want a troll to stop trolling, you need to figure out why the troll is trolling

if we want to get spicy with it, one thing i see a lot of is people trolling mutual aid requestsif you dig into *why*, you quickly discover that these trolls break down into roughly 3 groups:1. people who are living significantly below the poverty line (and thus may be offended by the mutual aid request and/or too embarassed to ask for the same assistance and cope by trolling)2. people who are unable to contribute to the mutual aid request and thus redirect their guilt into trolling3. people who are just antisocial for other reasons

the point here is that maladaptive behavior is a form of dataand data is important to understanding, and then fixing, psychosocial problems

and again, to be clear, this is not any particular person's problem to solve. block the trolls and move on, if you want.but fediblock is incident response, *not* an intervention

@ariadne I'd like to hear your ideas on moderation. I have mine, but they don't work on a federated system and recommending self-defense isn't helpful in too many cases. Do you have blog articles I can read?

@spencer your analysis is spot on.i think, regarding emotional maturity, we unfortunately see a lot of instances started by people, who themselves have also not emotionally matured.and so this leads to a lot of the tit-for-tat behavior we see in the fediblock tag, for example.this usually leads down one of two paths, because either the necessary emotional maturity gets acquired through "trial by combat", which leads to later burnout of the instance adminor the instance admin just gives up proactively and shuts down the instance after a few months of battle

@technocrow exactly. i don't want to traumabond with people who feel disconnected from their heritage, but i hope those people find a way to similarly reconnect with their heritage

@matildalove it depends on the nature of the blocklist. i think that blocklists are good for some classes of abuse, such as spam, and CSAM, for example.

@gaditb I have thoughts but they break down to community design mostly. If you can build a community culture that is inclusive and forgiving to neurospicy people, it helps prevent a lot of fuckery. And I don't mean writing a CoC and calling it good. I mean actually doing the work to set the intention.Unfortunately the rest of the thoughts are going to wait until the morning as my girlfriend wants to go to bed...

@ariadne I always wonder if people are really that different here, than on the commercial networks. Like sure, there is less advertising, less automated recommendations and probably a slightly higher barrier to register, but people stay who they are
