I use Gnome for many reasons: it's really well-designed, it looks good, it's ergonomic, etc. etc.I also use it because fuck LARPers.

@rnd Yeah, like, did you actually try it or are you saying this because you look at the screenshot and have a habit of assuming a lot?Never had any problem dragging windows by widgets in the titlebar. Failing that, there's also a Super key, it lets you drag by anywhere on the window.

@drq as a programmer, I don't want to deal with CSD in my programs. On the one hand, I like how space efficient GNOME title bars are, but on the other, don't want to implement that anywhere because I'm not targeting just GNOME.everything else is just me trolling :)

@a1ba @rnd Yeah, Gnome's app ecosystem is kinda its own thing, and it can be argued that it is kinda the point. Nobody does things the way they do because they think they have the better way.And, to my preference, they are mostly right.Mostly. There are still things I'd like to change, but for the most part it's great.

@drq I don't really believe in app ecosystems as a concept, especially in the UI/UX space...I'm using a specific app not because it's written for KDE or GNOME, a TUI or CLI app or if it's developed by Apple or Microsoft, but because it's the best app in it's class. Besides, there is a lot of unique software that cannot be replaced, like games. And games definitely do not care about GNOME client side decorations.The only exception are mobile apps but those are designed around touch input, not keyboard & mouse, it's a physical limitation, not an ecosystem one.

@a1ba Well, games do not need to conform to any UI/UX guidelines, they have their own ones.And that's okay, because a game doesn't want to make your life easier, to the contrary, it should be a challenge.For the other things, I still prefer that the apps respect the Four Cs (Consistency, Continuity, Context, Conveyance) of the underlying system. I don't want to learn, like, twelve different sets of semantics for every tool.This is why things like Blender are still impregnable to me. Even after all those years it is still unlike any other app in existence and handles like a nightmare.

@drq I do agree with the Blender example though. But then who exactly decides which UX guidelines Blender have to follow? One that Windows user got used to? Or another that the Apple user likes? Does it have follow the UI of 3ds Max or Maya? (well, some would be really happy if they did that)

@a1ba Well, yeah, that IS the question.Doubly so for a program with such a rich history of complexities that are built around its own set of semantics that are based on its own underlying code abstractions. It's like an OS all upon itself, UX-wise.Or, as some put it, it's "UI designed by the best programmers".

@drq нравился долгое время, но окончательно достало то, что каждое обновление стабильно убивало мои расширения.В остальном он хорош! Некоторые Mutter запчасти, как например control-center использую и сейчас на своём niri сетапе, который подозрительно (намеренно) очень косит под гном :Blobhaj:

@CuteFerret Я, на самом деле, даже расширениями пользоваться почти перестал. У меня сечас один-единственный экстеншн - это GSConnect. Гном - это сразу не про кастомизацию.

@drq без расширений он слишком деревянный и ощущается хуже Макоси...Мне нужны иконки на рабочем столе, нормальный таскбар, мне не нравится серая бездна за экраном в overview и ещё много мелочей которые гном делает намеренно :BlobhajShock:Да, он стабильный, быстрый и удобный и этого не отнять, но линух без модульности - не линух, ведь модульность системных компонентов же буквально его идеология! :BlobhajBlanketBlue:
