I’ve been dealing with #PPWR compliance for Mastodon’s merch shop and frankly I don’t see how this regulation doesn’t just eradicate all small business within the EU. This is a self-goal if I’ve ever seen one.

@Gargron it is actually that bad? The chatter I've seen has been mostly on Meta platforms and has the form of LLM generated anti-EU propaganda so I wasn't sure.

@Gargron my SO sells art on the internet and was complaining about this. It all sounded like she must have misunderstood something because it couldn't possibly be that bad...Now I've gone and read up on it and yes - it looks almost as if it was purposely designed to kill small and medium businesses. Yearly fee per country larger than what you can hope to recover in sales. Several minutes of extra bureaucratic documentation per item. None of it bothers Amazon.

@Gargron there's nothing wrong with the intent behind such laws but implementation matters a lot. for compliance and viability of the businessyou want to make it easyso for packaging, rather than forcing little businesses to jump through the same hoops as amazon, you say something like "you can only buy packaging from compliant manufacturers"then you make the manufacturers of the packaging jump through the hoops insteadeasier to enforce too

@benroyce It would've been easy enough if you had one central registry to comply with... rather than having to register in every EU country with local representative requirements! Each costing varying amounts of money!

@Gargron I think this policy will eventually implode over non-compliance. I don't think any of the small online sellers I know personally are even aware of the regulation.

For the time being it won't be possible to buy #Mastodon merch from EU countries besides Germany. Only Germany, Switzerland, UK, and USA. And new plushies are coming in like two months. Not ideal.

@Gargron I've been after one for ages, that's one UK sale at least! The thing I find so weird about PPWR is having to secure representation in each individual country you want to sell to. It's such an obvious barrier to small business, but surely it also goes against the whole ethos of the single market?

@Gargron The group responsible for the new #PPWR and #GPR laws is "Expert Group on Waste (E03343) "has 102 industry organizations (and a few NGOs) and 27 EU parliamentarians.The roster you can see here: https://ec.europa.eu/transparency/expert-groups-register/screen/expert-groups/consult?lang=en&groupId=3343&fromMeetings=true&meetingId=72501So many companies that produce packaging...Amazon, IKEA and H&M are also a part of the ECommerce Europe Group.
