@phnt One must accept that the simplest answer to the normie question is to simply kill them. You can dumb things down for them all you want, but all the handcuffs and guardrails in the world shall not save them from their own incompetence. For they will always make a bigger idiot, with bigger feet with which to shoot himself.

Or just ssh into the local host using the sudo users account. It's that easy. No need to alter anything. Ssh is a simple solution where su fails.

This is honestly the problem with you computer niggers. You overthink and create problems where none exist and then propose elaborate solutions where none are needed. Being complicated is midwittery.

Yes. I just gave you a solution. Maybe you need to read what you wrote or learn to write what you actually mean. I'm not sure which is the issue. It's not me though.

I'm not going to argue with a faggot. You wanted admin privileges that a normal user doesn't, learn to use ssh or just kill yourself. I'm sorry for solving your issue or not. Maybe your issue is that you're a hoped up on cum and can't think straight.

@phnt If Microsoft manages to change (Install updates and shut down) to a process that installs updates AND shuts down the computer, then they will have the trust needed for people to actually install them. You cannot have trust to install updates, when the updates include shit like the new Notepad for example.

@Humpleupagus @benis_redux @phnt @Suiseiseki He literally doesn't know, what he's saying :Asuka_Baka: Users can use Linux without need to use Sudo, because they are users. The entire point of User is the same on linux as on Windows. To NOT have access to the "Fuck everything up button"Once you have the Admin password, you can just log in as Admin. Works on both Linux and Windows. He just made a distinction without difference.

@phnt yep. forced updates are necessary when users always ignore them and then complain they were vulnerable to some thing that the updates took care of.

@phnt @PalePimp implementing this would mean killing the last pieces of the UNIX model that are left. In UNIX, access is separated on per-fd basis, meaning if your code has access to an fd, it can do literally anything. In Windows, object access is much more fine-grained.In other words, in order to get what you want in Linux you'd need to re-implement half of NT. Nobody's gonna do that, because right now Linux works fine as a server system. The only people who want it for desktop are Gaben and a bunch of autistic nerds.

@VD15 @phnt it might have inconvenient UX, but at the same time Apple has mostly nailed making a system usable by both massive retards and power users. Fwiw Mac today has more UI customisation options than L'Eunuchs. And I don't mean replacing one WM with another, but more like adding quality of life features.

@phnt @VD15 that's minor. The thing with Linux is, almost all software is 3rd party software. It's a shame that Apple hardware sucks so much tho..

@phnt @VD15 not talking about repairs or maintenance. Look, if I can't play vidya on a computer that I own because the vendor doesn't allow plugging third-party GPUs without pulling my asshole to shreads goatse-style and bending over backwards, then I don't want to deal with it. The extensibility of Apple hardware is non-existent even for the desktop options. There's no real reason for this other than Apple trying to squeeze the maximum amount of dollars from its users.

@phnt @VD15 on the purely software side, it's also not as bright. I can't just plug three fat HDDs into my Mac via some Thunderbolt enclosure, make a RAID, offload more rarely used data to it, and call it a day. Anything like this requires a full-fat NAS or DAS, because Apple and filesystems aren't friends. ZFS port for macOS exists but I wouldn't trust it with the Donald Trump's dickpic collection, much less my own data.Basically, you're not allowed to extend your computer in any way except connecting it to other computers. This just sucks.

@PalePimp @phnt >As mentioned, people have to stop assuming Linux is a 1:1 clone of windows.True. Linux is much worse from the design PoV. Just a bunch of festering old hacks from the 70s and 80s and some band-aids from the 90s and 2000s to hold it all together.

@PalePimp @phnt you can't fix Linux without breaking compatibility with literally every piece of software that runs on it. Fixing Xorg has taken almost 20 years now, and that's just one of components. This "fixing" of yours means effectively designing and implementing a new system from scratch, and no sane person would ever call it "fixing".So no, you can't "fix FOSS stuff". You can only replace it.On a related note, 20 years is about the time it would take to raise a new generation of developers. Perchance, it's not that code that needs fixing but the Linux retards.

@phnt @PalePimp > once it left the somewhat carefully designed cathedral of AT&T, the bazaar started bolting on things without much thought. No, UNIX has always been this way. Signals appeared almost immediately in UNIX and it was always a bad design. I can't really even name a single good design decision that went into UNIX systems. Literally none. UNIX only succeeded because the competition was too expensive and too anal about compatibility with other systems. Basically, it was cheap and just good enough to be useful.

@PalePimp @phnt that's true, they solved it probably a lot worse than I think. You might want to watch Benno Rice's (of FreeBSD fame) talk titled "What UNIX cost us". It's pretty good at summarising how 50 years later the Eunuchs legacy still makes people's lives miserable.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-IWMbJXoLM

@PalePimp @phnt there isn't a paradise out there. Overall, my point is that Eunuchs and L'Eunuchs are badly designed systems powered mostly by pure autism and spite, and only successful due to the sheer lack of competition that would be just as cheap and at the same time at least marginally better.

@PalePimp @phnt sooo.. you don't seem to understand the costs of this, ultimately. The costs are:* Developing and testing software for Linux/UNIX systems is more expensive than for the competition.* Maintaining it in the long run is also expensive (good luck running an even 5yo software on a modern distro).* Backwards and forwards compatibility is a fuck.* Drivers are either in the kernel today, or there's a dedicated team maintaining them out of kernel (like nvidia and openzfs people do), or you can fuck off. You can thank stable-api-nonsense.rst for this. Truly and laughably atrocious justification for the lack of skill.Long story short, if you only need to run a browser like most Linux people do, then it's all fine. Google has you covered with their fat compatibility layer called Chromium. If you want more cool stable software in the long run, then I'm sorry but you might want to switch to Windows and never update except when you really need to.On a related note, most Linux distros either are in the process or have already removed GTK2 and all software that used it, despite it being perfectly fine. That's Linux for you.

@PalePimp @phnt >This is not true either, I build binaries that runs from kernel 3.x up to the latest 7.1.xI'll just address this one point, because the rest can be refuted just as easily. You can obviously run a hello world binary that doesn't depend on anything other than a bunch of system calls. You can't run a full-blown GUI application that may or may not use sound. Try running native ports of games and see how well those work, especially when compared with running same games over Proton. You might wanna read this piece https://blog.hiler.eu/win32-the-only-stable-abi/

@PalePimp @phnt > for example go to realvnc.com and download their VNC viewer and marvel.Doesn't work on my distro. You were saying? Yes yes, I know it's because I use NixOS, but that's exactly my point. Here's a pretty popular distro that doesn't run your software for reasons. And it might just as well break from that glibc bug I posted in the previous message.

@PalePimp @phnt read the error message again. It doesn't start because I'm running NixOS, which does funny things with dynamic linking. I actually do have X11 installed.

@PalePimp @phnt >If NixOS is doing non-standard thingsThat's exactly my point. Every distro does a non-standard thing somewhere. This one is just the most obvious.Next thing you tell me would be to install Qt5 or GTK2 if my program depends on it somehow, or ship it with the program. Because as we have just discovered, many distros now don't package those frameworks. How long will it be before distros stop packaging X11 libraries, btw? Another 5, maybe 10 years? Yeah...

@PalePimp @phnt >At the risk of sounding like a broken record: Linux is not a single entity, is that so hard to understand? Yes, it is. There's one kernel, one libc, one set of core utilities, one of everything. Most of it is even developed by the same company (Red Hat), which others just adding stuff in specific areas like drivers.>Linux is not perfect, distros are not perfect, both are made by people who make mistakes and have their own interests and reasons for doing things, news at 9.Sure. The problem is, these people refuse to learn from their own mistakes, much less mistakes of others. It's an endless cycle of Sansara^Wautism and we're stuck in it.

@PalePimp @phnt >Is GIMP being made by RHEL?Is Photoshop being made by Microsoft? Duh.. >Are you sure that you understand what a Linux distro is?A Linux distro is a collection of anally retentive autistic individuals, hellbent on building upstream software with their own preferred settings that ultimately affect nothing important but break compatibility with software built by other distros. Mostly, this is done in order to satisfy their terminal stage OCD.For all its worth, almost all distros could be virtually indistinguishable from each other in anything but what their package management software is called and what default wallpaper they ship. Functionally, they are all about the same: a cli tool that downloads some binary packages built from upstream sources, those are unpacked into the filesystem hierarchy, etc. It's just irrelevant, because those upstream sources are literally the same for every distro (sans different versions maybe). The only exceptions are Gentoo, NixOS, GuixSD, and some perverted things like Yocto. These are more or less unique.>You are aware Android which is based around the Linux kernel doesn't use libc but bionic and that musl is another implementation of libc that you can use with the Linux kernel don't you?Half of Linux fans will tell you that Android isn't really Linux. And that's true. Google could replace the kernel tomorrow and all Android software would still work, because Android doesn't rely on the kernel syscalls as its user API. I'd rather leave Android out of this discussion, because it's a huge can of worms on its own.
