       i think one of the biggest timewasters on the linux (gnome) desktop for me right now is that programs/the system has a hard time remembering previous "save as" folder locations. i desperately wish these last used folders would appear in "Recent" in the file picker, or in a new "Recent Locations" or sth... and no, the bookmarks/faves aren't good enough, because this quickly gets cluttered and has to be manually audited. also that doesn't work across UI toolkits...

       and you would think that this works: right click on a file in Recent and use "Open Item Location". but that right click quietly replaces the save-as filename with the name of the file you right clicked! bizarre! (at least in signal, not sure if that's happening in all apps)

       haha, inkscape (gtk3) doesn't even have "Recent" in the "save as" filepicker 🙃

       *coming up with weird solutions like a FUSE filesystem that tracks saving sub-locations (in ~/Documents, ~/Pictures etc) via inotify and offers them as a drive*

       this works magically for gtk3 apps! hilariously, gtk4 apps also show this Recent entry now, _but_ it is entirely useless as it shows only files, no folders, whereas gtk3 file pickers show only folders, not files there

       @mntmn Yes, I am 100% there with you. I don't like Windows but the explorer works at least in a consistent way. Anyway, it's one reason why I do pretty much everything in the shell. Though it needs a bit more thinking (which I hate) it will get you there quicker most of the time.
