slapped NetBSD on a spare machine and well… X11 nonsense isn't something I was missing.

Anyway… got other pain points that pretty much confirms that if I'd truly use NetBSD (or any *BSD really) it would be a chimera of sorts to get something that comes from a more modern era.Like service management with supervision isn't a bleeding edge feature.

@ska If only a NetBSD developer would have created such a supervision software.(Although I don't think roy@ was still an OpenRC dev when supervise-daemon got created ^^)

@freya @leah @ska @fiore @hipsterelectron I feel like FreeBSD would have at least tried to adopt it.

@fiore @leah @hipsterelectron @freya @ska Different thing but reminds me that the portable way to propagate exit code information when child died from a signal is to make your program kill itself with something like kill(getpid(), signum)

@ska @leah @fiore @hipsterelectron @freya True, although it depends on the behavior that's needed.Like I don't think time(1) as a P should degrade information passed to G.

@SRAZKVT @ska @lanodan do it on big endian for most certainty (hopefully won't hurt openrc at all but for graphics and sound stuff and some others it frequently does)

@wyatt @ska @SRAZKVT Yeah, graphics are the best source of entertainment in big-endian.Audio… bit less so.

@ska @wyatt @SRAZKVT Heh, reminds me that for wonky audio I do test with headphones but with just holding them next to my ears so they can be put away easily.(Although I guess a clever way would be to not hear it live)

@freya @lanodan @ska @SRAZKVT or if you want to actually be able to afford it powerpc

@wyatt @freya @ska @SRAZKVT Well most affordable big-endian is aarch64_be as it doesn't needs somewhat rare hardware.See http://aarch64.be/ for OS images and some docs.

@wyatt @freya @ska @SRAZKVT Well it's at least consumer-ish so yeah not too rare, but it's pretty retro by now.While an aarch64 machine is one probably everyone has and probably is even more gathering dust than anything else ^^

@freya @lanodan @ska @SRAZKVT you have multiple sparc64 systems so i don't think you are a reasonable metric

@freya @wyatt @ska @SRAZKVT PA-RISC I have never touched either.Although reminds me local hackerspace got a DEC Alpha, but hasn't been booted in ages (plus not really sure what sort of fun thing an alpha has).

@phnt Yeah, that's the reason for me to poke at NetBSD more seriously.Plus like FreeBSD has been giving me corpo-vibes for a while so even if it would be non-LLMed it wouldn't be my target.

@lanodan @freya @ska @SRAZKVT being 'pretty retro' makes it a better test target because you're more limited in ram and will hit more edge cases and it's a 32-bit processor to boot

@wyatt @freya @ska @SRAZKVT Yeah although I barely do graphics/sounds, so ram limits are barely a concern with pretty retro workstations, unless it's like the web-related ressource hogs (webkit-gtk browser, fedi server) but that would be getting close to masochism on such platforms.Usual stuff I'd more need to slap it into stuff like routers, or even more retro platforms.

@phnt Well… worst parts about OpenBSD is more that they do not have a bug tracker (just a mailing-list).And their security memery is quite few times just reputation/facade (like I do use some software from OpenBSD, but they're not the best they could do in terms of security, like way too much of OpenSMTPd runs as root, so only reason I still use it is practicality).And supervisor in ports… cool but a lot of the job with such software is integration, re-writing a bunch of service files doesn't sparks joy.

@wyatt @freya @ska @SRAZKVT Which is probably too small for any modern Linux due to how big the kernel got, could be enough for NetBSD but isn't in the supported list somehow.
