       @deutrino I'm pretty sure the admin is retarded. Mastodon is a hog, but it's not THAT bad. Last I remember from Niu days, it did run on a 80 euro/mo dedicated server with a fuckload of room to spare.

       @newt @deutrino I spec'd my VM with 8 you can get away with a lot fewer, but I keep mine high for when I compile Ruby or whatever during upgrades.I have 16GB of ram for the same reason but you could get away with 8 during normal operations.  If you really want to be stingy you thin provision to like 4cores8GB and then increase to 8core16 when you upgrade and then swap back the config if your VPS allows non storage upgrade.

       @deutrino @newt The biggest cost with VPS' is the primary SSD storage.  If your admin hasn't configured a separate disk/partition it's believable that the instance costs that much due to the remote media cache.

       @splitshockvirus @deutrino media can be served from an HDD. Ours does, at least. Postgres is a lot more sensitive to IO speed.
