I think it's because 1-on-1 formats are not "the" mode of Magic now, and Commander's lack of only you being the means of removing an opponent's piece has lead to people losing the importance of having removal pieces in their decks. Plus, with Commander, the card options for their deck's main focus are vast, so players sacrifice removal to fit in that one more cool card. (I mainly play Commander. Not bashing the format.)I don't even play slivers. Think they're fun to wrestle against. Just annoyed with many players.        Sure. You can play older formats without spending a dollar at Hasbro. Premodern is where it’s at. Or in my case, I just design my own sets rather than play the game anymore.

       There was a very important and probably detrimental change to the game in about 2015, which was the popularity of Commander. Later cards have been designed with three opponents in mind rather than just one. It’s like two different games and should have been treated as such. “There are duel cards, and there are commander cards.” Something like that.
