       @EUCommission now that you've allowed a category of apps to work more seamlessly and securely on the dominating mobile OS, prevent the mobile OS from becoming a dictatorship where Google has the final say on who is allowed to make apps: @keepandroidopen And while we're at it, get rid of DRM and take @pluralistic up on his idea to make Europe the disenshittifying hub for the world's technology.@openhomefoundation

       as long as governments mandate user-controlling apps, such as age-verification ones that require such remote-controlled operating systems, google's and apple's dominions will remain supported and required by governments, rather than challenged for citizens' sake.  as long as such features as biometrics and DRM are allowed to be used to serve remote interests through users' digital devices, taking precedence over users' interests and control over users, remote interests will keep on abusing and normalizing them, and solidifying the need for such remotely-controlled devices, making it even harder for individuals and societies to escape them even through democratic governments.CC: @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @keepandroidopen@techhub.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr @openhomefoundation@fosstodon.org

       I get where you're coming from. It's important to remember that "government" is not a single coherent entity. There are MEPs for example who are aware of the risks of age verification (a euphemism for identity verification) and chat control (whether in the voluntary or mandatory variant).        None of the progress we made in digital liberty and privacy (such as the cryptography wars, where it was uncertain we would even get real encryption on the web) came from governmental institutions filled with digital rights hippies. We formed coalitions with similarly aligned groups.        AFAICT we're in agreement.  government can't deliver liberty, as you say, but it can prevent it, as I said.  the problem is it's pushing strongly for concentration of power, aligning with the interests of these hoarders.  that makes achieving liberty a lot more difficult.  since democratic governments should be representing the people's interests, and people want liberty, not hoarders to accumulate wealth and power over the people, what can we conclude about governments that push for concentration of power over the people?CC: @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu @keepandroidopen@techhub.social @pluralistic@mamot.fr @openhomefoundation@fosstodon.org
