       personally, i think fediverse should grow organically, rather than be promoted or 'product managed'i like having a space where i do not have to think about whether or not some dude in a bank is reading my posts

       @ariadne yeah, I'm coming to that conclusion now.Last year pixelfed.social had 250k new people join in a week, briefly becoming the largest MAU fediverse server.It was chaos, and thankfully I over engineered a few things, I was able to run it on $2k of digitial ocean droplets (one app server + redis and one db server).php and mysql is boring, but it's scalable and pretty performant

       @ariadne i think we're going to land up with both. the fedi is going to mirror the complexities of real society and community networks. so we're going to have the fedi high street and the fedi underground. and i think that's amazing

       @ariadne flagship servers are essential, otherwise the ecosystem loses trust because we've seen countless instances shut down.pixelfed.social and mastodon.social are like pretty much guaranteed to keep running forever due to sustained funding.
