i have been effectively confined to my condo for the past several days because my HOA's administrator rekeyed the building and put the task of distributing the new keys to building residents in the hands of an HOA president who now lives in a nursing home.this has been a very schadenfreude experience.anyway, i am planning to disable the security locks on the fire doors in my building, because i feel like i should be able to, you know, leave my home whenever i want to leave it.

a lawyer friend of mine has informed me that they are utterly in breach of chapter 64.90 RCW, and that i can force the HOA into liquidation if they do not correct this problem

@ariadne @danlyke might be worth asking your lawyer friend if it's a sensible move to call the fire dept and report the hazard, and ask them to come out and resolve it.

seriously though. a modern cell phone is all you need to 3D scan an object and reproduce it on a 3D printer or CNC milling machine.and locksmiths are all like "oh yeah our proprietary locks and key blanks will totally protect you"what a bunch of con artists

@whitequark my building uses a proprietary key blank, so it was just easier to scan and mill a replacement key that way

@ariadne but anyway in the US context i think of locks not as security devices but as insurance devices as in, they make intruders switch to forced entry and insurance pays that out more readily

@ariadne we looked into milling a key once in similar circumstances and concluded after some research that without access to a machinist who doesn't ask questions it's pretty challenging to dobut that wasn't your circumstances
