@mntmn No it's not.Is it as fantastic as the hype says? No.Is it as bad as the critics says? No.Every tool has it's place, and for most people, if you know how to use a hammer you use it for everything. In this case most people don't know other technological tools than AI.I like the distinction artisinal coding, which elevates skills, rather than AI slop, which just degrades a perfectly good tool. As always, it's the hands that runs the tools and not the tools that produce the results.

@groot i looked into your source, and into the paper, which cites https://www.nature.com/articles/s41541-024-00950-9 and https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/15980494/ in the section about computational methods, the first one is MAFFT https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAFFT and the other FoldX https://foldxsuite.crg.eu/productsi don't see there any evidence of LLMs or of what is considered "AI" in the discourse right now. what am i missing?

@andi @groot interesting problems @ alphafold, at least a good rabbit hole. when most people hear "AI" they think of gpt, cla*de, text/image/video/music slop, deepfakes etc (thus: crap!), and i'm pretty sure the mega/giga datacenters are being mostly built for that kind of stuff (thus: reckless, VC driven, major contributions to climate change and ram/materials shortages), not for protein folding prediction?

alphafold is not in any sense an llm. it uses transformers for denoising, but the core tech is diffusion models.regardless, and I will here note that I work directly in this field, alphafold brings great joy to structural microbiologists and is at best mildly useful in actual practical utility. the party line from Alphabet is "it'll be really useful if scientists would just get better at using it" but I'm not sure how likely that is now that they canned the project team.CC: @mntmn@mastodon.social @groot@toot.community @andi@snac.sonnenmulde.at

@aakast @rakoo my issue is this: obviously i know that AI means at least 2 different things, one is the discipline/branch of computer science, "classical AI" or whatever. but it should be clear from the context of the current state of the world and dominant mainstream media/industry discourse, and my previous rants on vibecoding, slop etc that i'm not referring to that... there is a term for (pretending to) assume that someone isn't talking about the obvious thing but it eludes me atm
